Romans 8:1-11. Lord, this is the people that longs to see your face. Ps 23(24):1-6. Luke 13:1-9.
‘Leave it alone, sir, just one more year … then if the tree bears figs next year, so much the better.’
The parable of the unfruitful fig tree is intriguing. The vineyard’s owner sounds exasperated with a tree that appears to be only taking from his soil and giving nothing in return. The gardener listens and could have just destroyed the fig tree, but instead he gently suggests trying to save it with a little remedial work.
It is too easy to say that if another person is not performing according to certain requirements then they will be ‘given the flick’. Perhaps that person needs some guidance, care and spiritual nourishment to encourage growth and a fruitful response. Do we offer, like the gardener, to give another a chance?
Lord Jesus, may I have the courage and compassion to do as you would do.
