God offered to exchange chains of captivity for chains of love. In our obsession to be independent, free from all rules and restraints, we run the risk of becoming slaves to our own desires. God's chains, by contrast, do not enslave us, thwart us, hinder us, or stifle us. Instead, they offer us the freedom for which we were created--the freedom to choose what is right and thus to grow in relationship with God.

Ask God to bind you with chains of righteousness, justice, love, and mercy.

You never really know what you stand for until someone or something tries to push you over. You never really know what you believe until it costs you something. Give God thanks for the tests in your life. How has your faith been tested? How did you do in the test?

Our confession of sin must be continual because we continue to do wrong. But true confession requires us to listen to God and want to stop doing what is wrong. David confessed his sin and prayed, "Forgive my hidden faults. Keep your servant also from willful sins" (Psalm 19:12-13). When we refuse to repent or when we harbor and cherish certain sins, we place a wall between us and God. We may not be able to remember every sin we have ever committed, but our attitude should be one of confession and obedience.

God Wants You to Think!
In today's society, it's very easy not to think. We have so many devices and influences that think for us! Don't become lazy and neglect this precious gift. Turn away from distractions and use your mind to know God and his will.
Don't act thoughtlessly, but try to understand what the Lord wants you to do. Ephesians 5:17

There are three things that remain--faith, hope, and love--and the greatest of these is love.

1 Corinthians 13:13

Love is the greatest of all human qualities. It involves unselfish service to others; therefore, it gives evidence that you care. Faith is the foundation and content of God's message, hope is the attitude and focus, and love is the action. When faith and hope are in line, you are free to love truly because you understand how God loved. Love is an attribute of God himself (1 John 4:8).

Loving others is the key to being like Christ.

Christ said not only that we shall not hunger and thirst after spiritual blessings in vain; but also that we shall not hunger and thirst after other things, as we once did, before we tasted that the Lord is gracious. The enjoyment of this greater good overcomes the relish of less. What is the self-indulgence of sin, or the wastes of the world to one who is abundantly satisfied with the riches of God's house, and is allowed to drink so deeply
of the river of his righteousness? This is the blessed state we should seek after.

Good Gifts
We are to use the spiritual gifts God has given us to help others grow and mature in their faith. How can you use your gifts?
He is the one who gave these gifts to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God's people to do his work. Ephesians 4:11-12

Although Daniel was captive in a strange land, his devotion to God was a testimony to powerful rulers. If you find yourself in new surroundings, take the opportunity to testify about God's power in your life. Be faithful to God so he can use you to make an impact on others.

Our Attentive Gardener

Psalm 25:14

God offers intimate and lasting friendship to those who reverence him, who hold him in highest honor. What relationship could ever compare with having the Lord of all creation for a friend? Your everlasting friendship with God will grow as you reverence him.

Invest in your friendship with God by spending time in personal worship today.

People who are close to God have plenty to sing about. What young people are hearing about God's mercies from you? What old people are hearing about God's mercies from you?

Oaths, or vows, were common, but Jesus told his followers not to use them — their word alone should be enough. Are you known as a person of your word? Truthfulness seems so rare that we feel me must end our statements with "I promise." If we tell the truth all the time, we will have less pressure to back up our words with an oath or promise.

Change Through God Alone
Spiritual renewal comes from God alone; we cannot manufacture it ourselves. We must depend on him to change our hearts and lives. Ask God to give you the refreshment and new life your spirit needs.

Yet I will remember my covenant with you . . . I will establish with you an everlasting covenant.

Although the Israelites had broken their promises and did not deserve anything but punishment, God would not break his promises. If the people turned back to him, he would again forgive them and renew his covenant. This covenant was put into effect when Jesus paid for the sins of all humanity by his death on the cross. No one is beyond the reach of God's forgiveness. Although we don't deserve anything but punishment for our sins, God will not break his promise to give us salvation and forgiveness if we repent and turn to him.

No matter what you have done in your life, God promises forgiveness and salvation.

Water in motion is a metaphor for God's strength. Seeing the power of a mighty ocean or the pulse of the tide helps us understand the overwhelming power of God. Praise him for his thunderous strength!

2 Corinthians 9:7

People may hesitate to give generously to God if they worry about having enough money left over to meet their own needs. Paul assured the Corinthians that God was able to meet their needs. The person who gives only a little will receive only a little in return. Don't let a lack of faith keep you from giving freely and generously.

No matter how much you are giving to God's work, have you been doing it cheerfully?

Moses wanted to make sure that the people did not forget all they had seen God do, so he urged parents to tell their children about God's great miracles. This helped parents remember God's faithfulness, and it provided the means for passing on from one generation to the next the stories recounting the great acts of God. You can remember God's great acts of faithfulness by telling your children, friends, or associates what you have seen him do.

Recount God's work in your life with someone today.

Healthy Wealth
Wealth is a gift from God, but we must be wary of becoming too dependent on money. The best way to loosen money's grip is to give generously to God's work.

2 Corinthians 2:14

Believers are to be like a sweet perfume whose fragrance others can't help noticing. Just as we cannot control a person's opinion about a perfume's fragrance, we cannot control a person's reaction to our Christian message and actions. But if we remain true to Christ, his Spirit working in us will attract others.

Enduring Strength

God made all sorts of wild animals and cattle and reptiles. And God was pleased with what he had done.

Genesis 1:25

The fact that "God was pleased" indicates his capacity for pleasure. People sometimes feel guilty for having a good time or for feeling good about an accomplishment. This need not be so. Just as God was pleased with his work, we can be pleased with ours. However, we cannot be pleased with our work if God would not be pleased with it.

Time-Out
Whenever you feel overwhelmed by stress, give yourself a time-out. Sit and think about the times when God rescued you--and believe he will do it again.

How do you find "real life"? Many people think it comes from how they look, what they eat or drink, where they go, or what they do in their leisure time. But such things satisfy only our appetites, not our deepest longings. Real life comes from total commitment to God, the one who created life itself. It requires discipline, sacrifice, and hard work, and that's why most people never find it. As our friendship with God deepens, it leads to strength of character, peace of mind, and deep satisfaction.

The long-term rewards of obeying God are greater than any the world has to offer.

Spend a little time looking back -- at what you have done or not done. Then look forward -- to what you might yet do. With a little reflecting or "numbering," you may gain the wisdom to make the most of the precious time you have on earth. What does this verse mean to you?

God describes some people as being like horses or mules that have to be controlled by bits or bridles. Rather than letting God guide them step by step, they stubbornly leave God only one option. If God wants to keep them useful to him, he must use discipline and punishment. God longs to guide us with love and wisdom rather than punishment. He offers to teach us the best way to go. Accept the advice written in God's Word and don't let your stubbornness keep you from obeying God.

Lay Down Your Life
Jesus' example of friendship is one of incredible sacrificial love--he took the punishment we deserved upon himself because he couldn't bear to live without us. In what ways can you lay down your life for your friends?
The greatest love is shown when people lay down their lives for their friends. John 15:13

Hebrews 12:14

Sin always blocks our vision of God, so if we want to see God, we must remove it from our lives. Holiness is coupled with peace--staying out of quarrels. A right relationship with God leads to right relationships with fellow believers. Although we will not always feel love toward all other believers, we must pursue peace as we become more Christlike.

Pursue peace by making things right with someone you've wronged.

Use God's Scale

Sin always blocks our vision of God, so if we want to see God, we must remove it from our lives. Holiness is coupled with peace--staying out of quarrels. A right relationship with God leads to right relationships with fellow believers. Although we will not always feel love toward all other believers, we must pursue peace as we become more Christlike.

Pursue peace by making things right with someone you've wronged.

Remember your own "plank" when you feel like criticizing, and you may find that you have less to say.

Follow Jesus

Christ is the vine, and God is the vinegrower who cares for the branches to make them fruitful. The branches are all who claim to be followers of Christ. The fruitful branches are true believers who by their living union with Christ produce much fruit. Unproductive followers are as good as dead and will be cut off and cast aside.

The psalmist asked that God's name, not the nation's, be glorified. Too often we ask God to glorify his name with ours. There is nothing wrong with looking good or impressing others; the problem comes when we want to look good no matter what happens to God's reputation in the process. When you pray, ask yourself, "Who will get the credit if God answers my prayer?"

Jesus wanted little children to come because he loves them and because they have the kind of attitude needed to approach God. He didn't mean that heaven is only for children but that people need childlike attitudes of trust in God. The receptiveness of little children was a great contrast to the stubbornness of the religious leaders who let their education and sophistication stand in the way of the simple faith needed to believe in Jesus.

As Christians, we honor people because they have been created in God's image, because they are our brothers and sisters in Christ, because they have a unique contribution to Christ's church. Why not try to outdo one another in showing unselfish honor?

True rest comes only through God's peace, so keep your heart at rest in Christ.

Giving Thanks

It is discouraging to continue to do right and receive no word of thanks or see no tangible results. But Paul challenges the Galatians and us to keep on doing what is right and to trust God for the results. In due time, we will reap a harvest of blessing.

We can all be thankful that God gives people time to turn to him.

It demonstrated humility and willingness to turn from sin. This was the beginning of the spiritual process. But when Jesus baptizes with the Holy Spirit, the entire person is transformed. Jesus offers to us both forgiveness of sin and the power to live for him.

What did Nicodemus know about the kingdom? From the Bible he knew it would be ruled by God, it would be restored on earth, and it would incorporate God's people. Jesus revealed to this devout Pharisee that the kingdom would come to the whole world, not just the Jews, and that Nicodemus wouldn't be a part of it unless he was personally born again. This was a revolutionary concept; the kingdom is personal, not national or ethnic, and its entrance requirements are repentance and spiritual rebirth.

Jesus says living the good life has nothing to do with being wealthy, so be on guard against greed (desire for what we don't have). This is the exact opposite of what society usually says. Advertisers spend millions of dollars to entice us to think that if we buy more and more of their products, we will be happier, more fulfilled, more comfortable. How do you respond to the constant pressure to buy? Learn to tune out expensive enticements and concentrate instead on the truly good life — living in a relationship with God and being holy in who you are and what you do.

Ransomed Exiles
When we were far from home, like the Hebrew exiles, Jesus paid the price to bring us back to God. We've been rescued by the King of kings!

This verse shows that there were not many gods, as many ancient religions believed. Jehovah (or Yahweh) is the only true God. The nation of Israel was about to enter a land with many gods. Both then and today, there are people who prefer to place their trust in many different "gods." But the day is coming when God will be recognized as the only one. He will be the King over all the earth (Zechariah 14:9).

Worship God today by telling of his uniqueness and sovereignty.

Incarnation Foretold

Lukewarm water makes a disgusting drink. The church in Laodicea had become lukewarm and thus distasteful and repugnant. The believers didn't take a stand for anything; indifference had led to idleness. By neglecting to do anything for Christ, the church had become hardened and self-satisfied, and it was destroying itself. There is nothing more disgusting than a half-hearted, in-name-only Christian who is self-sufficient. Don't settle for following God halfway. Let Christ fire up your faith and get you into action. Draw near to him through confession, services, worship and studying his Word. The Holy Spirit can reignite our zeal for God when we allow him to work in our hearts.
