I will bind you to me forever with chains of righteousness and justice and love and mercy.

Hosea 2:19

God offered to exchange chains of captivity for chains of love. In our obsession to be independent, free from all rules and restraints, we run the risk of becoming slaves to our own desires. God's chains, by contrast, do not enslave us, thwart us, hinder us, or stifle us. Instead, they offer us the freedom for which we were created--the freedom to choose what is right and thus to grow in relationship with God.

Ask God to bind you with chains of righteousness, justice, love, and mercy.

James 1:3 -- For when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. (NLT)

You never really know what you stand for until someone or something tries to push you over. You never really know what you believe until it costs you something. Give God thanks for the tests in your life. How has your faith been tested? How did you do in the test?

— Psalm 66:16-20 —

Come and listen, all you who fear God;
let me tell you what he has done for me.
I cried out to him with my mouth;
his praise was on my tongue.
If I had cherished sin in my heart,
the Lord would not have listened;
but God has surely listened
and heard my voice in prayer.
Praise be to God,
who has not rejected my prayer
or withheld his love from me!

Our confession of sin must be continual because we continue to do wrong. But true confession requires us to listen to God and want to stop doing what is wrong. David confessed his sin and prayed, "Forgive my hidden faults. Keep your servant also from willful sins" (Psalm 19:12-13). When we refuse to repent or when we harbor and cherish certain sins, we place a wall between us and God. We may not be able to remember every sin we have ever committed, but our attitude should be one of confession and obedience.

God Wants You to Think!
In today's society, it's very easy not to think. We have so many devices and influences that think for us! Don't become lazy and neglect this precious gift. Turn away from distractions and use your mind to know God and his will.
Don't act thoughtlessly, but try to understand what the Lord wants you to do. Ephesians 5:17

There are three things that remain--faith, hope, and love--and the greatest of these is love.

1 Corinthians 13:13

Love is the greatest of all human qualities. It involves unselfish service to others; therefore, it gives evidence that you care. Faith is the foundation and content of God's message, hope is the attitude and focus, and love is the action. When faith and hope are in line, you are free to love truly because you understand how God loved. Love is an attribute of God himself (1 John 4:8).

Loving others is the key to being like Christ.

Christ said not only that we shall not hunger and thirst after spiritual blessings in vain; but also that we shall not hunger and thirst after other things, as we once did, before we tasted that the Lord is gracious. The enjoyment of this greater good overcomes the relish of less. What is the self-indulgence of sin, or the wastes of the world to one who is abundantly satisfied with the riches of God's house, and is allowed to drink so deeply
of the river of his righteousness? This is the blessed state we should seek after.

John 6:35

Matthew 7:13-14 -- [Jesus says,] "For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow is the road that leads to life, and only a few find it." (NIV)

The world's way is a highway at midnight: wide, smooth, fast. Life's way is a dirt track along a cliff in a storm: scary, risky, difficult. But the dirt track leads to the mountaintop. Which road are you traveling?

Good Gifts
We are to use the spiritual gifts God has given us to help others grow and mature in their faith. How can you use your gifts?
He is the one who gave these gifts to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God's people to do his work. Ephesians 4:11-12

For he is the living God, enduring forever. His kingdom shall never be destroyed.

Daniel 6:26

Although Daniel was captive in a strange land, his devotion to God was a testimony to powerful rulers. If you find yourself in new surroundings, take the opportunity to testify about God's power in your life. Be faithful to God so he can use you to make an impact on others.

Tell others about your powerful, eternal God.

— Psalm 118:14 and Psalm 18:2 —

The LORD is my strength and my song;
he has become my salvation.

The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge.
He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

When you feel temptation approaching, as a rabbit is aware of the hawk hovering near, run instantly to Christ for protection. He will not fail you. He is both the rock of your salvation and your hiding place. Whenever sin, fear or worry threatens you, run to Jesus, crying, "Lord, help me!" and He will.

— Matthew 5:33-37 —

"Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord.' But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God's throne; or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. Simply let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one."

Oaths, or vows, were common, but Jesus told his followers not to use them — their word alone should be enough. Are you known as a person of your word? Truthfulness seems so rare that we feel me must end our statements with "I promise." If we tell the truth all the time, we will have less pressure to back up our words with an oath or promise.

Isa 40:31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their

Change Through God Alone
Spiritual renewal comes from God alone; we cannot manufacture it ourselves. We must depend on him to change our hearts and lives. Ask God to give you the refreshment and new life your spirit needs.

Yet I will remember my covenant with you . . . I will establish with you an everlasting covenant.

Ezekiel 16:60

Although the Israelites had broken their promises and did not deserve anything but punishment, God would not break his promises. If the people turned back to him, he would again forgive them and renew his covenant. This covenant was put into effect when Jesus paid for the sins of all humanity by his death on the cross. No one is beyond the reach of God's forgiveness. Although we don't deserve anything but punishment for our sins, God will not break his promise to give us salvation and forgiveness if we repent and turn to him.

No matter what you have done in your life, God promises forgiveness and salvation.

The Lord often ties our patience. When he delays

Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. If anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

No Christian should ever think that he or she is totally independent and doesn't need help from others, and no one should feel excused from the task of helping others. Be very careful never to forget what you have seen God doing for you. . . . Tell your children and your grandchildren about the glorious miracles he did.

Deuteronomy 4:9

Moses wanted to make sure that the people did not forget all they had seen God do, so he urged parents to tell their children about God's great miracles. This helped parents remember God's faithfulness, and it provided the means for passing on from one generation to the next the stories recounting the great acts of God. You can remember God's great acts of faithfulness by telling your children, friends, or associates what you have seen him do.

God made all sorts of wild animals and cattle and reptiles. And God was pleased with what he had done.

Genesis 1:25

The fact that "God was pleased" indicates his capacity for pleasure. People sometimes feel guilty for having a good time or for feeling good about an accomplishment. This need not be so. Just as God was pleased with his work, we can be pleased with ours. However, we cannot be pleased with our work if God would not be pleased with it.

— 1 Peter 2:9-10 —

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

People often base their self-concept on their accomplishments. But our relationship with Christ is far more important than our jobs, successes, wealth or knowledge. We have been chosen by God as his very own, and we have been called to represent him to others. Remember that your value comes from being one of God's children, not from what you achieve. You have worth because of what God does, not because of what you do.

Real life comes by obeying every command of God.

Deuteronomy 8:3

How do you find "real life"? Many people think it comes from how they look, what they eat or drink, where they go, or what they do in their leisure time. But such things satisfy only our appetites, not our deepest longings. Real life comes from total commitment to God, the one who created life itself. It requires discipline, sacrifice, and hard work, and that's why most people never find it. As our friendship with God deepens, it leads to strength of character, peace of mind, and deep satisfaction.

The long-term rewards of obeying God are greater than any the world has to offer.

Spend a little time looking back -- at what you have done or not done. Then look forward -- to what you might yet do. With a little reflecting or "numbering," you may gain the wisdom to make the most of the precious time you have on earth. What does this verse mean to you?

— Psalm 32:8-10 —

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will counsel you and watch over you.
Do not be like the horse or the mule,
which have no understanding
but must be controlled by bit and bridle
or they will not come to you.
Many are the woes of the wicked,
but the LORD's unfailing love
surrounds the man who trusts in him.

God describes some people as being like horses or mules that have to be controlled by bits or bridles. Rather than letting God guide them step by step, they stubbornly leave God only one option. If God wants to keep them useful to him, he must use discipline and punishment. God longs to guide us with love and wisdom rather than punishment. He offers to teach us the best way to go. Accept the advice written in God's Word and don't let your stubbornness keep you from obeying God.

Pursue peace with everyone, and the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.

Sin always blocks our vision of God, so if we want to see God, we must remove it from our lives. Holiness is coupled with peace--staying out of quarrels. A right relationship with God leads to right relationships with fellow believers. Although we will not always feel love toward all other believers, we must pursue peace as we become more Christlike.

You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye."

Jesus doesn't mean that we should ignore wrongdoing, but we should not be so worried about the sins of others that we overlook our own. The fruitful branches are true believers who by their living union with Christ produce much fruit. O LORD, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness.

Psalm 115:1

The psalmist asked that God's name, not the nation's, be glorified. Too often we ask God to glorify his name with ours. For example, we may pray for help to do a good job so that our work will be noticed. Or we may ask that a presentation go well so we will get applause. There is nothing wrong with looking good or impressing others; the problem comes when we want to look good no matter what happens to God's reputation in the process. When you pray, ask yourself, "Who will get the credit if God answers my prayer?"

For the sake of God's faithful love, let your actions give glory to the Lord.

"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."

Love is more than simply warm feelings; it is an attitude that reveals itself in action. How can we love others as Jesus loves us? By helping when it's not convenient, by giving when it hurts, by devoting energy to others' welfare rather than our own, by absorbing hurts from others without complaining or fighting back. This kind of loving is hard to do. That is why people notice when you do it and know you are empowered by a supernatural source.

— Psalm 147:1 —

Praise the LORD.
How good it is to sing praises to our God,
how pleasant and fitting to praise him!

There's a story about a man who, leaving church one Sunday, complained about the music. "I didn't like the hymns you chose today," he said. The pastor simply replied, "That's okay, we weren't singing them for you." Though we are blessed doing it, our worship is not for ourselves — it is for God. Sing to the Lord and exalt him.

If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit.

Galatians 5:25

God is interested in every part of our lives, not just the spiritual part. As we live by the Holy Spirit's power, we need to submit every aspect of our lives to God--emotional, physical, social, intellectual, vocational. Paul says, "You're saved, so live like it!" The Holy Spirit is the source of your new life, so walk with him. Don't let anything or anyone else determine your values and standards in any area of your life.

With the Holy Spirit as your guide, you will act with God's values and standards.

— 1 John 4:1-4 —

Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world. You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.

It is easy to be frightened by the wickedness we see all around us and overwhelmed by the problems we face. Evil is obviously much stronger than we are. John assures us, however, that God is even stronger. He will conquer all evil — and his Spirit and his Word live in our hearts!

Sometimes we hesitate to do good because we don't see any results. But if we can maintain a heavenly perspective, we understand that we don't often see the good that results from our efforts. If we truly believe that Christ has won the ultimate victory, it must affect the way we live right now. Don't let discouragement over an apparent lack of visible results keep you from working.

Do the good that you can do. Your work will have eternal results!

— John 3:19-21 —

This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.

Many people don't want their lives exposed to God's light because they are afraid of what might be revealed. They don't want to be changed. Don't be surprised when these same people are threatened by your desire to obey God and do what is right, because they are afraid that the light in you may expose some of the darkness in their lives. Rather than giving in to discouragement, keep praying that they will come to see how much better it is to live in light than in darkness.

I waited patiently for the LORD;
he turned to me and heard my cry.
He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
out of the mud and mire;
he set my feet on a rock
and gave me a firm place to stand.
He put a new song in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear
and put their trust in the LORD.
Blessed is the man
who makes the LORD his trust,
who does not look to the proud,
to those who turn aside to false gods.
Many, O LORD my God,
are the wonders you have done.
The things you planned for us
no one can recount to you;
were I to speak and tell of them,
they would be too many to declare.

Waiting for God to help us is not easy, but David received four benefits from waiting: God (1) lifted him out of his despair, (2) set his feet on a rock, (3) gave him a firm place to stand, and (4) put a new song of praise in his mouth. Often blessings cannot be received unless we go through the trial of waiting.

Incarnation Foretold
The Bible foretold that Jesus would come--and not in vague terms. The Bible's clear evidence helps us rely on the truth that Jesus is the Messiah.
The Scriptures clearly state that the Messiah will be born of the royal line of David, in Bethlehem, the village where King David was born. John 7:42

2 Samuel 22:29
For thou art my lamp, O LORD:
and the LORD will lighten my darkness.

Dear Jesus,
Without You my way is so dark that I cannot go
any further. With You, my path is brightly lit and
I can go forward in confidence. Thank You Jesus
for being the Light of my life. Amen.

Luke 2:9 -- And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. (KJV)

Fear of death? Of taxes, of people, of pain? Of things seen and unseen, of things near and far, of being left out or missing out? Of God? Don't let your fears keep you from hearing the Good News. How do you think you would respond if you saw an angel?

— Revelation 3:14-20 —

"To the angel of the church in Laodicea write:
These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God's creation. I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm — neither hot nor cold — I am about to spit you out of my mouth. You say, 'I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.' But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see. Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest, and repent. Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me."

Lukewarm water makes a disgusting drink. The church in Laodicea had become lukewarm and thus distasteful and repugnant. The believers didn't take a stand for anything; indifference had led to idleness. By neglecting to do anything for Christ, the church had become hardened and self-satisfied, and it was destroying itself. There is nothing more disgusting than a half-hearted, in-name-only Christian who is self-sufficient. Don't settle for following God halfway. Let Christ fire up your faith and get you into action. Draw near to him through confession, services, worship and studying his Word. The Holy Spirit can reignite our zeal for God when we allow him to work in our hearts.

and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of

that the Spirit of God dwells in you? (NKJ)

Rest from Worry
When tempted to worry about life's burdens, rely on this promise from Scripture: God will take care of you. Trust him with your needs. Remember your responsibility to be godly, and he will protect you!
Give your burdens to the LORD, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall. Psalm 55:22

The LORD is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him.

Habakkuk 2:20

Idols have no life, no personhood, no power; they are empty chunks of wood or stone. Temples built to idols are equally empty. But the Lord is in his temple. He is a real person--alive and powerful. He is truly and fully God. Idolaters command their idols to save them, but we who worship the living God come to him in silent awe, great respect, and reverence. We acknowledge that he is in control and knows what he is doing.

Approach God reverently and wait silently to hear what he has to say.

She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus.

Matthew 1:21

Jesus means "Savior." Jesus came to earth to save us because we can't save ourselves from sin's consequences. No matter how good we are, we can't eliminate the sinful nature present in all of us. Only Jesus can do that. Jesus didn't come to help people save themselves; he came to be their Savior from the power and penalty of sin. Thank Christ for his death on the cross for your sin, and then ask him to take control of your life. Your new life begins the moment you ask him for it.

God's Son was born into the world to be your Savior.

"The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" — which means, "God with us."

Immanuel is with you. That's the ringing message of Christmas. Loneliness is natural for us during the holidays, but it can be lightened by remembering that Jesus Christ, Immanuel, is here near you, around you, within you, always, everywhere, both now and forever. Pause and think of that, and praise him!

"Jesus is Immanuel, God with us. A prayer will reach him, a wish will find him, a groan will pierce his heart — but do confide in him."
