Hi, I'm new to this group and just want to get to know others walking the road of recovery. I have a little more than 100 days of continuous clean time and right now I am struggling with my thoughts. I am about to start working the fourth step and am a bit worried about it. I am not sure I want to get to know myself if you know what I mean. can I get some encouragement here? my clean date is July 29 2006.:162:

Hi Bruce.
After over 30 years of drinking I think I will always be new to sobriety. I know what you mean about getting to know yourself. I have been a drunk for so long, now that the alcohol is gone who am I? I don't even know where to start. I haven't done the fourth step and I know how it looks at first but really is it as bad as the bottom of the bottom of your last bottom?
There are a bunch of sober people here who can help you so stick around and enjoy.:D

:67: Bruce! :17: Glad to have you join us here. I had some of the same feelings prior to doing the 4th step. I have to tell you once I did the 4th step and then the 5th step with my sponsor I felt a release that felt freeing. It was release from all the baggage I had been carrying around for all those years I was drinking. My sponsor had me read the 4th step in both the Big Book and 12 x12 and answer all the questions that was in them. We also have some more info on the 4th step here http://www.cyberrecovery.net/forums/showthread.php?t=72 . Please feel free to continue to share with us here. We are here for you. :42:

:17: Hi Bruce, I also know what you mean about unsure if i want to know about myself. I guess though i wanted to change enough that i went forward with the 4th step anyway. In the end it felt good to get real with myself. But remember when you are doing it to also write down character assets also. We are not bad people trying to get good, we are sick people trying to get better. You will free yourself of alot in it like Tammy said and you will feel a lift as you move along in your steps. So dont give up. :1:

That fourth step can look like a doosy, but it is always an illusion.
Getting to know yourself won't turn out to be as bad as you think it will.
I PROMISE...what you will find out is that you are not the 'bad' person you think you are. That is one of the biggest reasons that the fourth step is so important.
What you are going to find out, is that you are just like me, and many, many others, and that that's okay, and that you no longer have to hide. We all have some skeletons in our closet, but they are dead and in our past. THERE IS NO MONSTER IN THE CLOSET. The boogy man turns out to be just a figment of your imagination. What could be more free-ing than that?
Just keep plugging forward, you have so much more to gain than you have to lose.
Love ya later
Kai
