THANKSGIVING FIRST Thursday - November 22, 2007

“I will give thanks to the LORD because of his righteousness and will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High.” – Psalm 7:17

On July 4, 1776, the thirteen American colonies declared their independence from Great Britain. That event sparked the American Revolutionary War which dragged on for six long years. In November 1777, a year and a half into the War, victories for the colonies were few and far between. In the midst of a disillusioned nation, Samuel Adams called for a day of Thanksgiving. The Boston patriot who had been a catalyst for revolution, knew the importance of honoring the Lord.
In a speech before the Continental Congress on November 1, 1777, Adams declared: “It is therefore recommended… to set apart Thursday the eighteenth day of December next, for solemn thanksgiving and praise, that with one heart and one voice the good people may express the grateful feelings of their hearts and consecrate themselves to the service of their divine benefactor.”
It was a motion that was enthusiastically adopted by all thirteen states and is remembered as the first nationwide official Thanksgiving Proclamation.

On this Thanksgiving Day, put aside the cares and troubles you have and focus on first giving thanks to the Lord. Today in prayer, thank Jesus for all that He is.

“Thanksgiving Day is a jewel, to set in the hearts of honest men; but be careful that you do not take the day, and leave out the gratitude.” – E.P. Powell

God’s Word: “I will give you thanks in the great assembly; among throngs of people I will praise you.” – Psalm 35:18
