Tech Support

I had been doing Tech Support for Hewlett-Packard's DeskJet division for about a month when I had a customer call with a problem I just couldn't solve. She could not print yellow.

All the other colors would print fine, which truly baffled me because the only true colours are cyan, magenta, and yellow.

For instance, green is a combination of cyan and yellow, but green printed fine. Every color of the rainbow printed fine except for yellow.

I had the customer change ink cartridges. I had the customer delete and reinstall the drivers. Nothing worked. I asked my coworkers for help; they offered no new ideas.

After over two hours of troubleshooting, I was about to tell the customer to send the printer in to us for repair when she asked quietly, "Should I try printing on a piece of white paper instead of this yellow paper?"

I was working for Gateway tech support about 8 or 9 years ago, when I got a phone call from and IRATE woman who screamed and yelled at me, about how she had just gotten a brand new pc and the monitor blew out. She said she would not accept a refurbished monitor, that I’d better send her a brand new one.

I told her calmly that I had to troubleshoot first, but if I determined the monitor was actually defective, I would ship her out a new one.

I asked her to tell me what the last thing she was doing – before her monitor went out. She replied she had been fixing her speakers. I then asked her to check the back of the monitor for the 2 plugs that were coming out of the back of it… she replied “oh no there aren’t” so I then instructed her to look on the floor for the one plug that should be coming out of the back of the monitor and for her to plug it in for me.

That fixed it… and I’ve NEVER been hung up on so quickly before.
