Suppose we fall short of the chosen ideal and stumble? Does this mean we are going to get drunk. Some people tell us so. But this is only a half-truth. It depends on us and on our motives. If we are sorry for what we have done, and have the honest desire to let God take us to better things, we believe we will be forgiven and will have learned our lesson. If we are not sorry, and our conduct continues to harm others, we are quite sure to drink. We are not theorizing. These are facts out of our experience.
Pg 70 - The Big Book
Man, I really know how hard it is not to beat myself up with I screw up! I need to: PUT THE BAT DOWN as my sponsor used to say! Just as it speaks above, if I do wrong in one way or the other, all I need do is to check my motives, be sorry for my wrongs and be willing to let my Higher Power take me to a better way of things. Sounds simple, huh?! I know it's hard because I am bad to beat myself up at occasion. I have learned that I inventory the matter, make direct amends whenever possible, talk to God about it and get strength and ask for the courage, strength and power to get better. Slowly but surely, it does get better!!! SO...
PUT DOWN THE BAT!!!
Here's a prayer that may help:
God, Grant me the maturity ....
to accept what I'm feeling .....
and the courage to correct
the actions that I took .......
that made me feel this way.
"God, help me to have the courage
to take the next right action.
And, to do what I already know
is the right thing to do."
A Serenity Prayer With a Different Spin
God, grant me the wisdom to know the difference
Between the things that I must accept
And the things that I must change.
Help me to have the willingness and
the power and the courage....
To change the things that I must change
And, help me in my efforts
To change the things that I must change.
Help me to accept the things that I cannot change.
Help me to have peace of mind ....
About the things I cannot change.
