what are the characteristics my higher power dose not have?
I am kind of
stuck on this one my God has the power to hate, love, be anger, be
kind my higher power has all power, so I don't truly understand what
the book is asking for the only thing I can come up with as I beating
my head is nothing is unforgivable, God dose get angry burned Israel,
sent floods to was the earth of wickless all anger acts, and hates
evil and that is the other thing God is always good not Evil that is
all I get is it that simple or I am I thinking to much again??:162:

Hi Tammi,
I don't know the workbook but it sounds like there's no right or wrong answer, that it's just an exercise to help you determine what your view of God is. I'd think that whatever answer you put down is perfectly fine. Yes, don't think so much and just let your thoughts flow. :234:

I agree with anniemac - the workbook isn't a right or wrong thing, it's about you and your higher power.
I was told when I first got clean, that the only requirement for a higher power was that it be loving and caring and more powerful than me. That works for me today.

Hi, I'm like the others I think. I don't know about the workbook either, but to be able to list the qualities I would like in a Higher Power, then hold on to that as how I perceive my God to be, is important to me. I don't think there is anything that God doesn't feel or isn't capable of. That's part of what makes Him, Him and me, me. For me, I believe there is no limit to God's forgiveness and grace. Were that not true, I would not be a reasonably happy, functioning sober alcoholic today. Terry:1:

I had alot of issues to.
I was trying to bring a religios God into a spiritual fellowship.
I got clean in the preworkbook days.
I just have to keep a spiritual belief that works for me,
and doesnt lead to low self esteam.
Hopefully you are using more than just the
step guide in your steps.
I get my sponsees to read the step guide after they
have a simple belief system that works for them.
Normaly they dont start on the step guide untill they
have spent at least three months preparing.
The step guide is like a final exam on your belief system.
Keep coming!

It is funny that you all say the same thing, and as far as working the steps yes the 1rst time working in the step book, I have work then in the how & why and basic text, and have also worked them with a AA sponsors who worked out of the Big Book and 12 &12. the reason why my sponsor is having me do this is because of my relationship issues almost caused a relapse and anger issue and trust issues after 6 years she dosen't think I should be so angry at the world so we are working on changing the only thing I can me it is getting better and I am now on my 3rd step so I may have more questions I am sure I will.

I'm Kai, I'm an alcoholic.
I struggled with the God thing too. I grew up in church, my father was a pastor, and what I learned all those years was that sinners go to Hell. Well, then they told me that we all sin, so I was screwed. My parents were also diligent to point out every bad, and wrong thing they ever saw in anyone (except themselves, of course). So, that was the way I saw God.
My Higher Power today, is like Jesus Christ. When the woman was caught in adultry, it was people who wanted to judge (stone) her, but Christ forgave her, and HE was the ONLY one standing there who had every right to 'throw stones'.
Christ sat and ate with the prostitutes, and lepers, and homeless, etc. He didn't shun and reject them because they didn't meet some sort of standard. So, my Higher Power is also accepting and loves me unconditionally.

My relationship to my Higher Power is only 12 steps away :162:

I step slacked for 14 years in recovery until I challenged my higher power to fully remove all my fear of people, places and things;so I could try and do the fourth and fifth steps. I did not believe I was worthy of having my personal God remove my character defects even after I divulged them to another person and God himself. I found my perception was wrong about almost everything. God has no judgment and as the second tradition says,he is a loving God who only wants the best for all of us.

Who I thought God was in my first year and the definition I used the first time I worked the steps has changed and grown through experiencing him working in my life. I don't think there is such a thing as pinning God down to absolutes - He will suprise you as you grow in your own spirituality in this program. There is no right or wrong answer to that question in the workbook - and the worst thing you could do is answer it to make it sound right for others. Who god is to you is a very personal thing and whatever you come up with is perfectly fine.
I guarantee you your definition of God's qualities and characteristics will expand and grow - as you do.
all that is required in the beginning is a little bit of faith and trust that there "is" a god and your not it.
Let him show you who he is by experiencing him in action in your life.
give him some room to move around in your life.
light and and love on your journey
