God's Greatest Miracle

And there came a fire out from before the Lord, and consumed upon the altar the burnt offering and the fat: which when all the people saw, they shouted, and fell on their faces.
Leviticus 9:24

Many Christians avoid reading the Old Testament because they think its teachings are irrelevant. Those who do read it often skim over the sections on the sacrificial system. What a mistake this is! We can miss many glorious verses in the Bible if we're skimming instead of reading.

In Leviticus 9, Aaron and his sons start performing sacrifices as newly consecrated priests. After Moses and Aaron bless the people, the glory of the Lord appears. A fire comes out from the Lord and consumes the burnt offering. The people fall on their faces in worship of God’s power and mercy.

When I read this I marvel at the works of God. His power and mercy are just as miraculous today as they were in Old Testament days.

Want to know what the greatest miracle is? Is it the lame walking? The blind seeing? The Red Sea parting? These are wonderful, but God's greatest miracle happens when a sinner comes to the Lord. God transforms him, taking him from the realm of darkness to the kingdom of light. We must marvel when God turns a prostitute into a prayer warrior or a thief into a theologian. That is the greatest miracle of all.

When God saves someone, He brings the dead to life. He did it with Lazarus. He does it with us.

When we see God's saving power work miracles, we should want to be like Aaron and his sons and fall on our faces in worship.
