Déjà Vu

"I have much more to tell you, but now it would be too much for you to bear. When, however, the Spirit comes, who reveals the truth about God, he will lead you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own authority, but he will speak of what he hears and will tell you of things to come." -- John 16:12-13

The words of Jesus sometimes seem to lose their freshness for us. We read his words and we say, "I've seen all of this before." We hear his words and we say, "I've already heard this so many times." The message becomes stale. How can we restore its freshness for ourselves?

After reading or hearing a passage that no longer seems to speak to you, relax your mind and ask the Holy Spirit to teach you its deeper meanings. The words of Jesus contain many meanings, and his words have many applications. It may be that you have missed some of them. The new insights that the words are capable of giving you may fall outside your usual ways of understanding. For new insights, call upon the power of the Holy Spirit who is ready to deepen your understanding of what Jesus teaches. The Spirit is Jesus' gift sent to enlighten you so that through your understanding, you might find joy.

Lord, may I never look at your word as stale, or think that there are no new depths that it can reveal to me. Open my mind to the inspirations of your Spirit that I might discover the fullness of what you wish to say.
