MY HELP COMES FROM THE LORD
“I lift up my eyes to the hills—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” Psalms 121: 1
How majestic are the mountains. Men in David’s time thought that their gods choose the mountains for their homes. The crushing flow of the waterfall and the serenity of the mountain stream speak of the might of God and the tranquillity found in God. These influenced these men of old but led them to worship the greatness of His creation rather than the One who created it all. Their expectation was limited to the boundaries of their own choosing.
The Psalmist lifts his eyes above and beyond the creation to the infinite might and majesty of God Himself. His help was to come from the boundless resources of His grace that was able to meet his need in whatever encounter he faced. His vision was to the One who made heaven and earth. He looked unto the Creator rather than His creation, to heaven rather than earth, to God rather than man, to the infinite rather than finite.
How often we limit ourselves by looking at the deceptive things that attract our attention which offer illusive security and have no power. We seek to gather strength from people and circumstances that have but human limitations. We often act in haste on our own initiative, leaning upon wealth, influence and the limited power of man rather than daring to put our trust in the One Who dwells above it all and changes not. God is ready to meet our need according to His infinite riches in Christ Jesus. Let us not be deceived in thinking we will find the answer to the longing our hearts in anything less than God Himself. “For by him all things were created: things in heaven and things on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together” [Col. 1: 16-17]. “My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”
When we look beyond the “mountains” to our eternal and infinite source of strength, even God Himself, we will exclaim with the Psalmist, “All my fountains are in Thee” [Psalms 87: 7]. May the Lord deliver us from living on past blessings. God seeks to fill our lives anew each day with His perennial freshness. We come to the Fountainhead to be refreshed with the ‘water of life.’ “He who believes in Me—who cleaves to and trusts in and relies on Me—as the Scripture has said, Out from his innermost being springs and rivers of living water shall flow (continuously)” [John 7: 38, Amp. Ver.]. God desires that we draw constantly and continually from His eternal spring. Are you drinking daily from this fountain of His grace?
Deepen your intimate relationship with God by child-like faith and prayer. It is not how much faith we have but is in WHOM we place our faith. Such were the experiences of Hudson Taylor as he left England with no support but with his stakes of faith deep in the faithfulness and sufficiency of God to open the doors of China to the Gospel. George Mueller whose life of faith reached above the “mountains” unto God. He made it a practice never to tell a single person his needs. He laid his needs before the Lord. Many times when there was nothing to feed the 2000 hungry orphans he called his workers together for prayer. Before noon arrived, the Lord miraculously sent in the supplies. During his lifetime he received 25,000 answers to prayer, 5000 of these came on the very day he asked God for the needs. “…where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” Dare to believe for “He is able to do exceeding abundantly above all we can ask or even imagine” [Eph. 3: 20].
