God Knows You
by

O Lord, you have searched me and known me. (v. 1)
+ + +
Visiting a woman in the hospital before surgery, she asked that I
read to her the 139th psalm. After the reading she patted my hand,
smiled, and said: "Thanks. Now I'm ready."
Psalm 139 does have that kind of effect on people. Its words wash
over you, like gentle waves on a beach, and you feel ready for
whatever challenges await.
God knows you -- what a comforting thought. Other people may
misunderstand you, or misjudge your intentions, or assign to you
motives that you do not have. But God knows you. God knows not just
your actions, but your motives, your intentions. God knows your
comings and goings, when you sit down and when you rise up. And as in
a family picture, where you see the father put his hand on the
shoulder of a son or daughter in a gesture of ownership, so God puts
his hand of ownership on you. "You . . . lay your hand upon me" (v.
5). You are God's child. Your graduation picture is on heaven's
piano.
Others may misunderstand you, but God understands fully. Others may
fail or abandon you, but God is with you, and for you, always.
Always. When we know that, when we really know it, then, like the
woman before surgery, we are ready.
God of grace, thank you for your abiding presence in my life.
