And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.
Mark 6:31
I’ve come to a little one-room cottage nestled among the tall pines at a monastery in Hastings, Nebraska. to be alone with God for twenty-four hours. No interruptions. I have a freshly baked loaf of nutritious bread and a thermos of water, my Bible, a notebook, cushions and my sleeping bag.
I love the crackling fire in the little wood-burning stove, the open Bible on the desk in front of the window. In the distance, I can hear a train whistle, children playing, leaves blowing. Yet there is a silence greater than any of the sounds. It’s an inner silence.
Already the emotional load I carried in with me is beginning to slip away in awareness of Christ’s healing presence. I will spend my time praying, pondering His words in the Bible, and just being present with Him in love. And I know that I will go away refreshed, nourished, made whole.
