Suffering
Although we prefer to have God speak to us through our joys, we often hear his voice through our sufferings. Our sufferings often tell us that all is not right with our lives. If we are unable to forgive, our bodies can signal their protest through pain, a sign that something needs to be changed. A great number of spiritual problems make themselves known through the breakdown of the body and the unraveling of emotions. God speaks to us through pain, using it to call us to a healthier way of being.
People are not responsible for all of their suffering, of course, but they might be responsible for a good deal of it. Once people learn how they cause some of their suffering by unhealthy mental attitudes, they can be healed. Freedom comes when people learn to understand that sometimes they are their own worst enemies.
Enlighten me, Lord, that I might understand what you say to me through my sufferings. Help me to learn and to be healed.
