"Does Your Light Shine?"

“You used to be like people living in the dark, but now you are people of the light because you belong to the Lord. So act like people of the light and make your light shine.” — Ephesians 5:8 CEV

I'm sure that most of us would prefer not living in the dark, for when the day is bright with sunshine, our spirits rise. It is claimed that those living in lands that have more days of sunshine a year have happier dispositions than those living in darker areas. If you compare the lilting music of Mexico to the more gloomy Russian music, that would tend to confirm the theory.

But our scripture today reminds us that we belong to the Lord, so that should make us lighthearted. Unfortunately some of us go around looking far from that. Sometime when you walk through the Mall, notice the faces of people you pass. You'll probably see very few who really look lighthearted. We get caught up in life's concerns and forget our many blessings, so we look as if dinner is burning in the oven. No one would suspect that believing in God's promises has improved our lives.

I remember dear Adeline, who had worked and reared several children alone, since her husband was an alcoholic who consistently moved in and out of her life. She had a quiet serenity and joy. She always greeted you with a smile on her face. She knew that she was God's child and that he would take care of her -- and she showed it!

You can't shine a light on someone else without brightening your own life. So today why not try being that lighthearted Christian who believes this promise: "His power at work in us can do far more than we dare ask or imagine." (Ephesians 3:20).

Almighty Father, grant that I may be a reflection of your heavenly light, so that I may brighten someone else's life. I shall try to remember that you created me in your image. Amen.
