"Sweet Taters"

“Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” — Matthew 5:48 NIV

Jesus was teaching his disciples how to live God's way instead of the world's way. First he told them what the world said, and then he told them God's way. (Matthew 5:17-47). He ended with today's scripture. "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect" (vs. 48).

You may have seen on the Internet a clever item called "Sweet Taters" that comically shows our flaws. "Spec-taters" do nothing but sit back and watch others. "Comment-taters" do nothing, but complain about what others do. "Dick- taters" tell others what to do. "Agie-taters" enjoy making trouble. "Hezzie-taters" are slow to do anything. "Emma-taters" are nothing but copycats. But the desired ones are the "Sweet Taters."

I look at the above and think how often I have been guilty of being one of those "taters." But with prayerful living, I am trying to learn from the Lord and turn to his ways instead of the world's ways. For we are promised: "And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit" (II Corinthians 3:18).

You don't have to live a life sitting on the sidelines, hesitating to do anything! You don't have to look at others, feel that you are lacking, and try to imitate them. You don't have to merely talk about what you're going to do. You can begin to do it! You are made in the image of God and with his help you can be yourself, the masterpiece that God has created. For as someone has said: "God don't make no junk!" You can be a Sweet Tater and enjoy the full life God wants for you.

Heavenly Father, forgive me when I lose faith in you and myself. Thank you for picking me up when I fall down. Guide me to become the person you planned for me to be. Amen.
