Sorting Things Out Optimistically

By Dr. Robert Schuller

By now you've discovered that the road of faith isn't always smooth. In fact, it can be downright jarring. The jolts can get to you if you don't watch out.

I've had to ride over some rough roads in my life. One of the most famous - or infamous - is the Hana Road, on the island of Maui in Hawaii. I remember almost bouncing through the roof when I hit a hole in the road. I'm sure that not a few of my readers have driven the same route themselves and likewise found their teeth almost loosened in their jaws. I was terribly tempted to quit and turn around. But I hung in there. And was I ever rewarded!

When I finally reached Hana, I saw the most beautiful waterfall in the world! The serenity at this spot made the torturous trip worthwhile. I'm sure that's the reason Charles Lindbergh chose to be buried there.

You must keep on believing that even the jolts on the rough road of life have a positive influence on you.

Faith is sorting things out optimistically. That's exactly what happens when you optimistically see the jolts that come your way as the impetus to re-examine your life.

Years ago I told the story of the potato farmer who sorted out the big potatoes from the little ones by riding to town on the rough roads. "Big potatoes ride to the top on rough roads," he said.

My daughter, when she was young, loved to sort out raisins in her raisin bran cereal and she discovered that if she would shake her bowl of cereal, the raisins would bounce to the top.

Welcome those rebuffs that can bring out the deeper qualities of life.
