I have been thinking today, it seems since I can remember I have needed something in my life to enable me to cope. First it was the drink, then the self-harm, food and now I have started smoking. Why can't I just be strong and deal with things instead of being so weak. Am I doing the right thing smoking, it does help me, I haven't self-harmed for nearly 2 week now. I know I should be dealing with my problems instead of adding another addiction to them. I don't know what to do.

Hi donnabubble35, If you pray then I suggest pray and seek guidance. If you have a sponsor, I also suggest talk with your sponsor. I suggest to anyone who has never smoked before to not smoke. I started smoking regularly at 15 and stopped last year at the age of 45 with the help of God. March 16th I will have a year of being smoke free. I have over 4 1/2 years sober and clean. I quit drinking in 2000. I feel better than I ever have. I have a Higher Power who helps me in living life on life's terms. I find my Higher Power being better than any alcohol I ever drank, any drug I ever took or any cig I ever smoked. You have to decide for yourself what to do. We are here for you to continue to come and share with. Keep coming back. :42:

Dear Donna
Hello my name is corey and i too have had many, many addictions from one to another and i do also smoke and i know its not good for me either and i want to quit but i definately need my higher powers help to have the strength. At every turn from each trial i have had,i look at how far i have come and the things i have overcome.GOD wants to help us through everything and when we are weak thats when he comes in and does miracolous things inside of us, all we have to do is be WILLING. We can never deal with things on our own we need that help and boy have i learned that lesson time and time again. So for now just be thankful for the things you have overcome, keep praying, keep seeking and everything will fall into place.Sometimes when we feel weak it is the hardest thing to do is ask for help but do realize it means you are reaching within yourself to want help and it is the most courages and strong thing to do.
I am really thankful you have found your way here and that you will become part of our recovery family. You havent self-harmed in 2weeks that is AWSOME and that is a BIG step thank GOD. I will keep you in my prayers if thats ok and i hope i have helped you in some way and thankyou for reaching out for help....
Much love and blessings on your journey
your friend in recovery corey aa cma

For those things you have yet to overcome, pray. I asked my sponsor several years ago what she did to stop smoking and she told me she prayed and that she stopped in God's time not hers. That's what I did. I prayed for God to remove the obsession and compulsion to smoke from me and He has.

As I began reading the Other Book, I would often come across a Bible verse which made no sense to me. Working the 12 steps has really cleared up one. Paul wrote " For when I am weak, then I am strong. It was in the fellowship of AA, admitting my weaknesses that I found the strength that had alluded me for years. I found that strength in my sponser, my home group, and most importantly, in my Higher Power. Like many spiritual equations, I don't pretend to understand why or how it worked, I just know that it did.
