Prisons --

God went to the Israelites and said, "I have commandments." They said, "How much are they?" God said, "They're free." They said, "Good, we'll take ten."

While in prison, "Paul thanked God and was encouraged" -- Acts 28:15 (niv). Paul was encouraged because Christian friends came to greet him. We need to thank God for our Christian friends and pray for them.

We can be in our own prison of anxiety, pain, guilt, discouragement, loneliness, etc. There are all sorts of personal prisons. At the risk of sounding trite, may I suggest that perhaps we can break our prison bars open by starting with a thankful heart for the positive things in our lives. Even with my stroke condition, there is so much for which to be thankful -- where do I start?

It is hard to complain and be thankful at the same time, so thankfulness would seem to be the preferred alternative. Try it -- you'll like it! Psalm 106:1 (niv) is a personal prison buster: "Praise the Lord. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever." Enjoy the freedom his love provides today.
