"Journey of Life"

“And our elders and all those living in our country said to us, 'Take provisions for your journey...” — Joshua 9:11a NIV

Life is a journey. It is sometimes described as a sail on a treacherous ocean, a hike through a dangerous forest or a climb up a steep mountain. Today's scripture tells us what the elders advised the travelers — "Take provisions for your journey." We could advise today's air travelers the same thing, now that airlines usually give passengers only a bag of peanuts and a beverage. Surely you wouldn't want to start a long journey without sufficient provisions for your needs. I remember that whenever my brothers and I went on a hike, my mother always provided us with food and emergency needs for our backpacks.

Prayerful living prepares you well for the journey of life. Jesus said, "I am the bread of life. Your forefathers ate manna in the desert, yet they died. But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which a man may eat and not die" (John 6:48-50). Jesus came to show us how to live in such a way that we may have life to the full (John 10:10). When we take time to praise and thank God each day, study his Word and fellowship with other believers, God will provide us with the fruit of the Spirit -- love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).

Then when you encounter a storm on the ocean, or you get lost in a deep forest, or your train derails on the mountainside, you have all the provisions you need to resist the situation. You don't panic and allow fear, anxiety and depression to rule your thoughts. It is then that you can enjoy the peace that passes all understanding.

Almighty God, I trust you to provide me with all my needs for my journey of life, as long as I trust and believe in your never-failing love for me. Amen.
