New Truth --
After being canned by the orange juice company and the muffler factory, I tried retirement and discovered that I'm perfect for the job.
I'm going to ask you to be honest. How do you read your Bible? Do you read it with a closed mind looking for those passages that confirm what you already believe, or do you read it with an open mind looking for new truth that you never noticed before? It's easy to gloss over passages that are familiar, so it is easy to miss something.
Years ago, I read an article in a Music magazine that said, "Mr. Merchant, when you go to your store on Monday morning, walk across the street and look at your store as if you are seeing it for the first time. Are you pleased with what you see? Is it inviting - does it say, 'I'd like to shop there?' "
Approach your Bible the same way. Every time you read it, approach it as though you are reading it for the very first time. Most people's belief system stems from the church in which they were raised, and they seldom progress from that point. Oftentimes, those that do move away from that foundation, do so because they have been influenced by some TV preacher. That can be good or bad, depending on the source. You need to be sufficiently grounded in God's Word so that you can't be misled.
John 5:39 (niv), "You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me." Do you want to know Christ better? Turn off the TV, get your nose in the Word and keep it there - always searching for new truth.
