"Today is a Gift"

“If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.” — Romans 14:8 NIV

Are you going to enjoy today? Will you drink in the beauty of the world around you? Will you look for the good in your family and friends today? Or will you waste your time fretting and feeling sorry for yourself? Only you can make that choice and the day's quality will depend on your decision. Norman Vincent Peale said, "The secret of life isn't what happens to you, but what you do with what happens to you." Someone sent me a saying that is well worth repeating:

"Yesterday is history." Paul the apostle wrote, "Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 3:13-14). Learn from the past, but don't dwell on it.

"Tomorrow is a mystery." Jesus said, "Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?" (Matthew 6:27). You could be worrying about things that will never happen.

"Today is a gift." Even if you have seemingly insurmountable problems, open your mind and heart to God's guidance, so that you see opportunities instead of problems. God is always with you: "For the eyes of the Lord range through the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him" (II Chronicles 16:9).

When fear and anxiety threaten you, remember this little adage: "Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift." Say to yourself, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." (Philippians 4:13). Then thank God for giving you the gift of "today" and you'll have a clear mind to cope with all events.

Lord, I thank you that I'm alive and ready for the challenges of today. Knowing you are with me makes today a beautiful gift. Amen.
