"Strength in Weakness"
“Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.” — II Corinthians 12:9 NIV
Are you feeling weak and helpless? Does this complicated life cause you to despair? Are you being treated unfairly by someone you trusted? In today's scripture, the apostle Paul has just enumerated the terrible trials he has been through in his life, and then says he will boast of his weakness. Why? Because it has drawn him closer to the Savior who is always faithful.
These past months have taught my dear wife, Jen, and me that we are not strong enough to face life on our own. We have taken our baby son, Austin, back and forth to the hospital for operations and treatments that we could never have imagined, in treating Hurler's Syndrome. Then my dad, Rev. Ted Nace, had to have quadruple bypass surgery. Not only were we very concerned for his well-being, but I was pressed into service recording his Prayerful Living messages for www.ourprayer.org. All these things were in addition to pastoring my congregation. I can say sincerely with Paul, "Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me."
Yes, Jen and I felt fear and anxiety when we were told of Austin's illness. Yes, our family was frightened when we learned of my father's medical condition. But instead of panicking, we turned to the Lord in prayer and his strength empowered us. You can do the same! "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight" (Proverbs 3:5-6).
Lord, thank you for loving us so much. We are all your children and we are weak, but you are strong. Amen.
