"Aging Gracefully"

“I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken.” — Psalm 37:25

We can all be sure that each birthday makes us a year older, but more and more of us are reaching the age of 100. For instance, Ed Rondthaler is 101, is in good health, writes songs and a weekly letter to the editor for his local newspaper. Various studies have been made to determine factors in living a long life and found the following: they are genes, advancements in medical science, exercise, non-smoking, ability to deal with stress, longstanding religious belief and an independent spirit.

Unfortunately some of us seem to give up when we retire and leave the workplace, rather than seeing it as an opportunity for new experiences. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow put it this way:

“For age is opportunity, no less.
Than youth itself, though in another dress.
And as the evening fades away,
The sky is filled with stars invisible by day.”

Today our psalmist tells us, “I have never seen the righteous forsaken.” We can do our part and age gracefully with God’s grace by protecting our health, then beginning each day by thanking him and saying, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13). God is utterly dependable! He will carry you through the stressful times, if you will “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Lord, I thank you for each day and for the opportunity to live it to the fullest. Give me the strength to surrender my life to you and to trust your guidance. Amen.
