Grab The Initiative

"Here is a simple, rule-of-thumb guide for behavior: Ask yourself what you want people to do for you, then grab the initiative and do it for them." Matthew 7:12 (The Message)

What a simple and truly Christ-like way to live this is! If all Christians took this kind of initiative, what a joy-filled body of believers we would be! Think of the impact we would make on the world. By nature we are very self-centered. Sin is synonymous with self-centeredness. The one thing I note in the gospels is how selfless Jesus was. He sacrificed his energy to heal others. When he was tired and the people came, he laid aside his fatigue to serve. There were times when he knew he needed to refuel and spend time with His Father. He never neglected that, for that is what gave him the strength and determination to continue on in his selfless acts. When no one took the initiative to wash the feet of those who entered the upper room, Jesus took on the role of servant and washed the disciples' feet, even the feet of the one who would betray him just hours later. Jesus indeed was the very image of selflessness. If we would be like him, we must set aside our desires, our wants, and even our needs at times in order to serve others. So take the time today and ask yourself, "What is it that I would like to have someone do for me today?" and then take the initiative and do it for others. It may warm their heart, but it will surely change yours. Take a step towards selflessness today.

Father, help me to focus on what I can do for others this day and set aside my own wants and needs. Help me to be more like Christ and rid myself of the self-centeredness that rules in my heart. I long to be selfless. Make me more and more like Jesus. Amen Quiet Waters

BURST OUT IN SONGS!

Praise the Lord!

Go ahead, say it out loud: Praise the Lord! He has heard your cry for mercy. He is your strength and your shield from every danger! He wants you to trust Him with all your heart � all your heart!

Is your relationship with God a matter of your heart or is He still just a relationship of the mind? Well, go ahead and make Him a heart thing today and you will be filled with joy and you might even lose control enough to burst out in songs of thanksgiving!

Father, forgive us for not getting excited about what You are doing in our lives. I am tired of just living a "good" life. I want a life filled with Your joy! As I go to the house of worship today I commit myself to respond to Your movement with joy! I give You permission to give me a Holy nudge to remind me to let go and burst out with songs of thanksgiving! The Well

The Next Phase

Joshua 7:8

It has been said, "Defeat is only defeat if you live in it." How a person handles defeat will determine his greatness in the Kingdom of God. Joshua exemplifies this in the defeat that the children of Israel suffered at Ai. It caused the hearts of the people to "melt, " and become "as water." This was a crippling blow to Joshua, who had just won a great victory at Jericho. Sometimes it is after the greatest victories that we suffer the worst setbacks.

Then, the real test came for Joshua. What would he do? How do you behave after you lose a game, or make a crucial mistake? We need to revenge disobedience with obedience and submission to God (2).

First, we must not live in condemnation, but respond to God's promises. Then, take all the people who were affected by the defeat and view it from God's viewpoint. Joshua dealt with the sin of Achan, but he also responded well to the plan that the Lord gave him. It is not enough to just deal with sin. We must go on to the next phase of the plan. This is the key to our growth.

Natural viewpoint will always creep in, but an instant response to God's promises will put us on the road to reclaiming the lost "Ai's" of our lives.

O Lord, what shall I say, when Israel turneth their backs before their enemies!

Let Go
"AND WE KNOW THAT IN ALL THINGS GOD WORKS FOR THE GOOD OF THOSE WHO LOVE HIM."
ROMANS 8:28

A mum was stunned when her little boy ran crying into the house clutching his hand that was covered in blood. 'Let me see' she said. Backing away he cried, 'No, you'll hurt me.' When he finally opened his hand, instead of a major injury she saw a tiny scrape that bled a lot. Later she laughed to herself at how dramatic he'd been over something so small. Then she realised she'd done the same to God. When her marriage ran into difficulties, she refused to pray. God kept saying, 'Let me help you,' but she just backed away to hide her pain and nurse her wounds. Because she was hurting she panicked thinking that God would do the same to her too. She clenched her fists and said, 'No, you'll hurt me.' Once she realised that this is what she'd done, she gave her pain to God and her healing began.
Today, give your situation to God, take your hands off it completely, refuse to discuss it any further, and trust the One who makes 'all things work together for good' (Romans 8:28). That's how prayer makes it possible for you to stop struggling with the situation and have peace about it; once you've handed it over to God it's no longer your problem. You can leave it with Him and trust that He'll work the situation out for your good. Word4U2Day

Come Home to God

Let us gather at the River of Life, the source of all truth and virtue, the Lover of our souls, our Precious Heavenly Father who welcomes us with arms wide open.

My Brethren, come home to God, draw nigh unto Him and He will restore and refresh your inner self which men call the soul.

The Spirit and the Bride say come and let all who hear come!

Come Home to God!

God our Father is the Source of all good things and all good things come from Him.

Goodness is a fruit of the Father's Spirit and is the very essence of righteousness.

When we enter into His Presence we sit down at His Banqueting table, the feast of love, and the goodness of God flows into us and imputes to us the righteousness of God making us Holy.

FROM SKEPTIC TO BELIEVER

“They cried to you and were saved; in you they trusted and were not disappointed.” Psalm 22:5



For what it's worth: As my alcoholism progressed, I gradually lost trust in everything. When I arrived at the doors of Alcoholics Anonymous, I did not believe AA could help me, but I had tried everything else without success, so AA was the only possibility remaining. As I attended AA meetings, I personally witnessed the sobriety of other once hopeless drunks, the softening of hardened hearts, the opening of closed minds, and the conversion of staunch agnostics. Although I tried, I could not deny the power of AA. I gradually began to trust that I could recover in AA, and with God’s grace, I am. Today, I am thrilled when I think about how far I have grown in trust issues, thanks to AA. I trust our Principles, our Program, our Fellowship, and our God. I attended as a skeptic and quickly grew to be a believer.

Faith Without Works Is Dead
14 What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Jesus Is The Friend Of Sinners

MATTHEW 11:19 NKJ
19 "The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, `Look, a gluttonous man and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!'. . . .

Jesus had trouble with the religious leaders of His day, because He was a friend of sinners. Jesus is the same today. He never changes. Jesus is your friend.

LUKE 19:7 NKJ
7 But when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, "He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner."

Religious people couldn't understand how Jesus could love a sinner -- they certainly did not. But Jesus did, and He still does.

Notice what Jesus said to the woman caught in the act of adultery.

JOHN 8:11 NKJ
11 She said, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said to her, "Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more."

Jesus does not condemn you for your sin. He understands. He came to earth and lived in a human body just as you do.

Jesus knows the pressure you face. He knows the pain. And Jesus cares. He cares enough to help you be free of the sin; because He knows that sin will destroy you.

Sin may give a temporary pleasure, but in the end sin always destroys. Jesus loves you too much to want you to be destroyed.

So Jesus is against sin because He loves you.

SAY THIS: Jesus is my friend.

Enjoy The Good Life
October 5

You have put more joy and rejoicing in my heart than [they know] when their wheat and new wine have yielded abundantly. In peace I will both lie down and sleep, for You, Lord, alone make me dwell in safety and confident trust.

God has prearranged and made ready a good life for you, but that good life is a choice. You have to decide to follow God’s leading in order to walk in it.

The Bible contains guidelines for that good life. It is not a book of laws; it is about the liberty and freedom to live the life that reaps good things. It is a book of wisdom that will lead you to peace and joy. If you do what the Word says to do, blessings will chase you and find you wherever you are (See Deuteronomy 28:1–2).

Practice Daily Times of Silence.

Everyone should insist upon a quarter of an hour of absolute quiet every 24 hours. Go alone into the quietest place available to you and sit or lie down for 15 minutes. Do not talk to anyone. Do not write. Do not read. Think as little as possible. Throw your mind into neutral. Conceive of your mind as inactive. Begin to listen for the deeper sounds of harmony that are found in the essence of silence. Author Starr Daily once said, "No man or woman who knows how to practice silence and does it has ever become sick to my knowledge. I have noticed that my own afflictions come upon me when I do not balance expression with relaxation."

NACR Daily Meditation

Sunday 5th of October 2008

I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power
through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your
hearts through faith.
Ephesians 3:16

Sometimes recovery is exhausting. Sometimes we feel like a raw nerve all
the way down to the core of our being. You can’t touch anything without
causing pain. In times like this we see clearly that our healing must be
from the inside out. Nothing superficial will be of any consequence. We
need our ‘inner being’, our ‘heart’, to experience God’s healing power.

It is clear from this text that God understands where our healing must take
place. The Spirit seeks to strengthen us in our ‘inner being’. Christ seeks
to dwell in our ‘hearts’. God is not interested in appearances. God is not
interested in performances. It is not God’s plan for us to ‘look good’. God’s
work will be deeper and necessarily more painful than this. The transformation
we need will take place at the core of our being.

This may seem impossibly difficult to us. But it is not impossible for God.
It is out of ‘his glorious riches’ that God can strengthen us. God is not
helpless in the face of our brokenness. God is a resource-full God.

I have worked hard to look good on the outside, Lord.
But, it has done no good.
It hasn’t worked.
I am not what I appear to be.
I need to heal from the inside.
Only you can do that, Lord.
Come Holy Spirit, to my inner being.
Come Christ, dwell in my heart.
Heal and strengthen me in the depths of my person.
Out of your riches, strengthen me.
Amen.

Stealing Another’s Sorrow

2 Corinthians 1:3-4: “Praise be to the God …of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles…”

A middle-aged mother of four said to me, “One day last week my coed daughter was sunbathing on the deck, crying over a recently broken engagement. I wanted to go to her and take all the hurt away.

Then I realized what I wanted was ‘to steal her sorrow.’ It belonged to her and I had no right to hurry it along or take it away. I could sit beside her and listen, but I could not be her God-like comfort and direction. I had to allow her to walk through it by herself.”

We cannot alter our loved one’s emotions, even though to try to do so might make us feel better. When we suggest: “Don’t cry now, tomorrow will be better” or “Cheer up, it’s going to be all right” or “It’s all for the best” we negate the reality of another’s grief.

However, we can listen (even when the words are uncomfortable to hear), without censoring or instructing. We can pray with and for them. We may be God’s instrument, with affirming encouragement, but not the ultimate source of their comfort. By listening, praying and stepping back we allow God room to start the recovery process.

Lord, your comfort brings lasting inner healing.
Help me to take my hands off and let you work.

Devotional For Dieters

October 5

Psalm 121:1-2
I will life up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.

Sonya was just about to dip into the ice cream when her doorbell rang. Guiltily, she threw the container into the freezer and slammed the door. Rushing to the hallway, she opened the door and found her sister standing there. Time after time, her sister showed up when she was most needed. Sonya couldn't believe the number of times her sister had been there to help her resist temptation. Sonya felt God was really watching out for her. Whenever her own strength gave out, God sent someone along who could strengthen her. Relieved, she let her sister in and told her the service she had just performed.

Today's thought: Strength comes from unexpected places when our own gives out!

New and Beautiful

"Mom! Mom!" called Todd one morning. "Look what happened!" He was clutching a glass jar with holes punched in the lid and some twigs and leaves on the inside.

Mom and Todd's little sister Emily went to see. Mom took the jar, and they peered through the glass. "Oh, good!" said Mom. "This is great!"

"Great?" wailed Emily. "How can you say that? Fuzzy's dead! He's all closed up in that dead piece of skin. He's not even moving!"

"That's okay, honey," said Mom. "You're going to learn a lesson about nature and a lesson about God, too. It's all about new life."

"Is Jesus going to give Fuzzy new life?" asked Emily.

"In a way, He is," replied Mom. "I know you liked Fuzzy as a caterpillar, but this is all part of God's plan for caterpillars. You knew this would happen. We talked about it, don't you remember?"

"Yeah, Emily. When the time is right, caterpillars weave a chrysalis around themselves, and then they change," said Todd.

"I forgot," said Emily.

"The chrysalis is what you see around Fuzzy now," said Mom. "In a way, he dies as a caterpillar while he's in the chrysalis. But in a few weeks, you'll get to see him as a new creature. He won't be a caterpillar-he'll be a butterfly." Mom smiled. "It reminds me of when a person becomes a Christian," she added. "We're spiritually dead when we're born into this world, but when we place our faith in Jesus, we're born into God's family, and we're changed. We become alive in Him. Fuzzy will be more beautiful when he leaves that chrysalis, and our new life in Christ is much more beautiful and free than the old one was."

Todd grinned. "And we didn't even have to spin a chrysalis!" he said.

Mom laughed. "No, Todd. God does the work in us," she replied.

"When Fuzzy comes out of the chrysalis, all new and beautiful, do you think I should give him a new name?" asked Todd.

"That might be a good idea," said Mom with a smile. "I don't think I've ever seen any 'fuzzy' butterflies."


HOW ABOUT YOU?
Are you aware that without Jesus you're spiritually dead? But the good news is that you can be made alive! Jesus gives new life to those who accept Him as Savior. Sins are washed away, and God says you actually become a new creation. Accept Him today and receive the new life Jesus gives. It's far better in every way than the old sinful life you once knew. (See the ABCs at the end of this book.)

All Things Are Pure
Day-by-Day

To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience are defiled. (Titus 1:15)

Your heart’s condition will be expressed through your life. It will be evident by your attitudes, your words, and your behavior. Jesus said that you can clearly see others only when your own eyes are unobstructed (Luke 6:42). If your vision is hindered by sin, you will not look at others properly.

If your heart is pure, you will approach life without malice. You will not question the motives of everyone around you; you will not doubt the truth of everything others tell you; you will not look for fault in others. Instead, you will look for the good in others, finding what is praiseworthy. You will not be naive or gullible, but you will seek what is good rather than what is evil. If your heart is pure, you will see others the way God sees them (Matt. 6:22).

If your heart is defiled, everything with which you are involved will seem corrupt as well. You will assume evil motives in others because you know what you would do given the same circumstances. You will be cynical about what you hear because your own words are deceitful. You will be drawn to evil people and evil things. How do you look at the words and actions of others? Are you critical of them? Are you judgmental? If so, ask God to purify your heart. Once He has, you will be free to see yourself and others as God does.

Watch for His Return!


"I tell you this, and I say this to every person: 'Be
ready!'"

-- Mark 13:37 (ERV)


KEY THOUGHT:
As Jesus tells this as a story (see the preceding story), he is in
effect saying, "Watch for my return!" Throughout his ministry, he
emphasized that he, the Son of Man, would return in glory and with the
angels of heaven. His return would usher in the ultimate victory of God
and bring complete and eternal salvation for his followers. However, we
must be watching and prepared for his return. His voice, his words, his
earnest pleading reaches out to us through the centuries and beckons us
to be waiting and longing for his return.


TODAY'S PRAYER:
O Father, thank you for the assurance that your Son will return and
usher your children into your presence and eternal glory. Thank you in
Jesus' name. Amen.
