God Our Strength

“Sing for joy to God our strength.” Psalms 81:1

How thankful I am that I do not have to become a good Christian in my own strength! What a burden that would be and what an utter failure I would be! God has promised that he will be our strength and God is faithful to keep His promises. Exodus 15:2 tells us, “The Lord is my strength.” Psalm 46:1 says, “God is our refuge and strength.” Paul tells us in Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Him that gives me strength.” There is no question where the strength to overcome comes from; and it is not us! God will do the impossible in our lives. He will be our strength. Yes, the victorious Christian’s strength comes from God; now that is cause for rejoicing! Let us sing for joy, because we no longer have to struggle to be good, we do not have to attempt to perfect our character on our own; we have only to call upon the Lord and ask for His help. God will finish the work He began in us. (Phil. 1:6) He will give us the strength to overcome. He will enable us to do the impossible. For in Him, all things are possible. (Matt. 19:26) God is our strength; let’s praise Him for that and sing for joy!

Father, how blessed we are that we do not have to attempt the impossible. For too long, many of us have been trying to be good Christians on our own. Help us LORD, to realize we can do nothing of ourselves; we need you to do the work in us. Help us to submit ourselves to that end. Give us your strength that we might be victorious. How we rejoice that you will complete what you began in us! Make us like you! We rejoice in that promise. May our song of joy never end. Amen Quiet Waters

I said 'Stop thinking about it!'
"DO NOT REMEMBER THE THINGS THAT HAVE HAPPENED BEFORE. DO NOT THINK ABOUT THE THINGS OF THE PAST. SEE, I WILL DO A NEW THING."
Isaiah 43: 19-18 (NLT)

Heard of David Beckham? Of course you have. Yet there was a time nobody knew him. He started out as most kids, loving football, dreaming of playing for his country. He played whenever he could and kept on practising. The mistakes he made, didn't stop him from keeping on trying, neither did getting beat! He concentrated on his future, not what he couldn't do or had done wrong. He made his first Premier League appearance for Man United on 2 April 1995, in a 0-0 draw against Leeds United. It could have been all over for Beckham then, except he had a pretty cool manager, Alex Ferguson, who choose to do something new. Instead of buying star players when experienced players left, he let the youth players replace them. He was criticised for it...especially when the season started with a 3-1 defeat! But Alex saw the potential in these young guys, he saw their hard work, dedication and determination. He did something new, so they could have a chance to fulfil their dreams. For Beckham... the rest, as we say, is History.
Imagine if had a manager like that, who'd take a risk on you so you could fulfil your dreams! Well guess what? U DO!!! God is the best manager you could ever have. He sees your potential and wants to unlock it! So get out there; God wants you on his team! Word4U2Day

Make straight the crooked pathways of my life

Create in me a new heart full of vigor and zeal for Your work's sake, Oh Lord.

Purify my soul from all sin and renew a right spirit within me, Oh God.

Open the doors of opportunity to me to reach the souls and hearts of many with Your Blessed Message of truth and love, Oh Lord Jesus.

Make straight the crooked pathways of my life and remove from me all things that hinder Your work in my life which are not expedient, Oh Precious One.

Let Your Ways by my ways and grant to me faith unlimited that I may move mountains and destroy the strongholds of Satan by Your Right Hand of Power, Oh Almighty God.

Father, grant unto me victory unto victory, joy unto joy, glory unto glory now and forever.

Amen.

The Carpenter's Eye

We had been shopping for the place where God wants us to build the radio studio we so desperately needed. And we were looking at a possible location - a big barn of a room with a high ceiling and totally bare. Well, I saw a big, bare room. But not Kasey. He's a carpenter. And he started talking about this wall here and that partition there - the control room in that corner, where the doors would be, how we could soundproof the floor - it was amazing! He was seeing all kinds of things in that room that I sure couldn't see! But, then, that's the great thing about carpenters!

I think that's how Jesus looks at you. After all, He's a carpenter, you know. His earthly father Joseph was one and Jesus grew up with a carpenter's skills - and a carpenter's eye - to see what someone could become not just what they are.

The blueprint is given to us in our word for today from the Word of God, Ephesians 2:10. And it is an eye-opener, really, as to who you really are and why you're here. "We are God's workmanship." You are no random assembly of molecules - you are a handmade, one-of-a-kind masterpiece creation of Almighty God. You may not have been treated like you're that valuable - but that's who you really ARE. And your Creator is the One who says so. Now, here's what the whole statement says, "We are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."

Now when Jesus looks at you, it's like my friend the carpenter looking at that empty room. He sees what that room could be after his skilled hands are finished renewing it. Jesus knows the masterpiece you were created to become . . . the difference you were created to make . . . the value you are created to have. That's what He sees. Maybe other people have only seen the bare room. And maybe you have been made to feel pretty worthless . . . incompetent . . . unloved . . . unworthy. But they don't see what Jesus sees - what you were born to be.

And here's why you may have missed knowing how much you really are worth. You're missing the One who GAVE you your worth. You're missing Jesus. The Bible says that we have marked up this masterpiece God made with our self-centered living - God calls it sin. And our sin has built a wall between us and the God we were made by and made for. So, we're cut off from the One who loves and values us most. So much that He thought you were worth sending His Son to die for!

And you will never really know how valuable you really are until you open your heart to the One who loved you enough to die for you. You and I did the sinning. Jesus did the dying. And you don't have to spend one more day away from the One who made you to be a masterpiece. The One who sees you through His Carpenter's eye - and sees one He created with His hands, paid for with His blood, and one He wants to forgive, restore, and renew.

But it's your move now. He made His on the cross. Now you have two choices - put your trust in Him to be your own Savior from your own sin - or tell Him, "No thanks, Jesus. I'll just settle for more of the same." Daily Wisdom

Devotional For Dieters
October 23

Psalm 118:13-14
Thou hast thrust sore at me that I might fall: but the Lord helped me. The Lord is my strength and song, and is become my salvation.

Going home to Mother's was murder on the diet. Stacy dreaded it. She knew the minute she walked in, her mother would ask her why she wasn't eating right, and then, for the next week, her mother would shove fattening, although delicious, dishes in front of her face. Going home required a double measure of strength. At those times, Stacy had to pray doubly hard. Sometimes it worked, sometimes she gave in. In the end, though, Stacy was glad to have God to turn to. Once back in her own apartment, He gave her all the resolve she needed to get right back on her diet. Truly, the Lord was her strength and her salvation.

Today's thought: I need saving from that which I would devour!

A BUNCH OF MIRACLES

“My ideas about miracles were drastically revised right then.” Alcoholics Anonymous, page 11:5

“He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted.” Job 9:10

For what it’s worth: My life turned out to be horror and misery. That convinced me there would be no miracles in my life. And I could never have believed there would be so many, all initiated simply by walking into a meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous. First, there was a seed of hope planted into the hardened heart and empty soul of this hopeless drunk. As I miraculously stayed sober that seed grew into a whole forest full of hope. During that time many more miracles matured: I grew able to trust; I began to know that I was lovable and could be loved; I gained some worth and knew I was worthwhile; I came to believe that a Higher Power could not only make me sane, but love and care for me – unconditionally; and, instead of distancing myself from Him, I want to grow closer. Yes, I am a living, breathing miracle. More accurately, I am a living, breathing bunch of miracles.

God bless you!

Jesus Blesses Little Children

15 Then they also brought infants to Him that He might touch them; but when the disciples saw it,

they rebuked them. 16 But Jesus called them to Him and said, “Let the little children come to Me,

and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God. 17 Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does

not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.” Luke 18

Why I Speak In Tongues

1 CORINTHIANS 14:18 NIV
18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.

Speaking in tongues is speaking in a language you have never learned. It is a supernatural act possible only by the help of the indwelling Holy Spirit.

MARK 16:17 NKJ
17 "And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;

It is estimated that today over 500 million Christians, in every country on earth, do speak in tongues. It started on the day of Pentecost, as recorded in Acts 2:4.

ACTS 2:4 NKJ
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Every believer can speak in tongues, if they desire. It is a free gift available to all believers.

1 CORINTHIANS 14:5 NKJ
5 I wish you all spoke with tongues . . . .

I think this doctrine has been so controversial because the devil is against it, knowing how helpful it is to believers.

I have no desire to argue with anyone. I do desire to see everyone enjoy all the benefits God has freely provided for us.

I speak in tongues because:

* It allows me to communicate with God better. There are things my mind just cannot put into words which I can express through the spirit by praying in tongues.

1 CORINTHIANS 14:2 NKJ
2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God . . . .

* It builds me up spiritually and refreshes me.

1 CORINTHIANS 14:4 NKJ
4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself . . . .

There are other benefits. I hope you are enjoying them, too.

SAY THIS: Thank you Lord that I can speak in tongues.

Get Over It
October 23

Open rebuke is better than love that is hidden.
—Proverbs 27:5

Hiding your true feelings, like resentment or unforgiveness, keeps you in bondage to them. It is impossible to get your day started right if you keep waking up with pain from yesterday’s wounds. If you carry around this kind of “emotional baggage,” it will poison your day.

Sometimes you have to confront things to make them better. But use wisdom. While it is good to talk about things, don’t dump all your thoughts and emotions on every person who comes along today.

Talk to God about your situation before you meet anyone. He may lead you to speak with someone you trust. But if He doesn’t, learn to trust it completely to Him, and let it go.

From the book Starting Your Day Right

-----

Let not your heart be troubled. . . .
John 14:1

After my cardiologist recommended that I take a heart test, I learned it would take days, maybe a week, to get his report. In the meantime, the possibilities kept turning in my mind. Another angioplasty? Open-heart surgery?

It began to get the best of me until I remembered my days as a young man with Walgreen Drugstores. Back then, when they had soda fountains, I worked in one as a waiter. I learned to make milkshakes, hot fudge sundaes and tuna-salad sandwiches. After the first few days, I felt at home—except when carrying cups of coffee to the diners. Protocol was to serve it in a dry saucer; spills were poor form.

Try as I might, I couldn’t walk across the room without spilling some. It was embarrassing. I would carefully watch the coffee as I walked, only to see it dribble over. The more I tried, the more my hands shook.

A co-worker helped me out. “Don’t look at the coffee,” she advised. “Focus on where you’re going. The cup will take care of itself.”

Her advice didn’t make sense to me, but in desperation I gave it a try. It took all my willpower to look straight ahead. But to my relief, when I set down the cup, the saucer was dry.

By thinking so much about my heart test, I was letting the “What ifs?” spill into my mind. So instead of dwelling on them, I concentrated on my work and the tasks of the day and trusted in God. And like that cup of coffee, the test results came out okay.

Lord, my life is never free of worries. Remind me that focusing on the positive cuts them down to size.

How to Control a Hot Temper.

This wild, undisciplined, primitive urge in you, which flames to the surface at times, can be tamed only by allowing Jesus Christ to take control. Therefore say to Jesus, "As You give power over the sins of the flesh, so give me power over the sins of the disposition. Bring my temper under Your control. Give me Thy healing peace in my nervous system as well as in my soul." If you are beset by a bad temper, repeat the above prayer three times every day.

NACR Daily Meditation

Thursday 23rd of October 2008

For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or
gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handled down to you
from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without
blemish or defect.
1 Peter 1:19

Change is not easy. It is a fierce battle. It can be difficult and discouraging.

Change often requires us to challenge the perspectives and rules which
have sustained our family system for generations. The ‘empty way of life’
we are attempting to change was handed down from our parents and their parents
before them and their parents before them. In a family committed to the
‘don’t talk’ rule, for example, saying even a simple sentence may require
overcoming distracting behaviors or other avoidance behaviors which have
been refined over hundreds of years!. Talking honestly to a parent or sibling
may be breaking family rules that have lasted for generations.

The Good News is that we have been redeemed from the empty way of life
handed down by our forefathers. Jesus redeemed us so that we can be free
from this kind of bondage. We can learn to talk honestly . We can learn
to experience our emotions. We can learn to trust genuinely. We can engage
in life. We can love and be loved.

We live in a battle between the empty way of life passed down to us and
the new life that has been provided for us. Living in solidarity
with our new life in Christ is a daily struggle, but as we practice this
way of life we break the vicious cycle of family dysfunction.

Lord, it isn’t just me that I am trying to change.
I am up against generations of dysfunction.
An empty way of life has dominated my family for a long time.
It has been passed down to me.
No wonder it seems so hard to change.
I need your help, Lord.
Help me to find hope in your understanding of my struggle.
Help me to find hope in your gift of redemption.
Amen.

Glimpse Into God’s Heart

Matthew 23:1 and 37: “Then Jesus said, ‘O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets… how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under his wings, but you were not willing.”

Do you want a glimpse into the heart of the Son of God? Then listen to the words he told the men who scorned and tricked him. “So often I yearned to surround you with my love and protection, like a mother hen shields her chicks from danger under her wings, but you would not let me. Instead you actively opposed me.”

These people threw stones at God’s attempts to be intimate with them. They closed their ears and hearts to God’s invitations of freedom and mercy. Although many of us desire God’s help in our lives, we may not be aware of how we hold his love at bay. Hesitant to run under his protective wings, we may be afraid of what might happen if we loosen our grip and become less busy and intense. Perhaps we who feel it is our responsibility to help everyone and everything to be just right are apprehensive about what surrender might mean.

Faith does involve risk. But God longs to free us from our unhealthy attachments and to help us be all we were created to be. We can run to his waiting arms, be safe and live.

Lord, I am willing, today, to trust you.

Holy Highway
By: Ron Edmondson Thursday, October 23, 2008
And a highway will be there; it will be called the Way of Holiness. The unclean will not journey on it; it will be for those who walk in that Way; wicked fools will not go about on it. Isaiah 35:8 NIV

There is a highway that leads to Heaven! Now, I know I'm a man and men are never supposed to need directions, but here is one trip you don't want to miss! You need to find the highway that leads to Heaven!

You already know that God is perfectly Holy, but did you know He expects us to be as well? “Oh no,” you're thinking, “there goes my chance.” But before you trade in your ticket, let me explain.

God is perfectly Holy and He will not allow sin to enter into Heaven, but God has provided a way for you and me to be Holy. God, by His grace, has a plan to conform us into the image of His son Jesus, who, like His Father, is also Holy.

God's plan is for us to accept Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior, the only way for a sinful man to reach a Holy God. Then, by further growing in our salvation, God will prepare our hearts to live in Heaven. Then, one day, Jesus will return to gather up His brothers and sisters, and we will share in God's glory with Jesus! Then we will be Holy, just as He who called us is Holy!

But you should also know that today, yes today, you can be Holy. By setting your heart on things above, by persevering under trials, by keeping the faith, by loving God with all your heart, mind and soul, you can be Holy, if not in actions, then in the attitude of your heart. And God can be pleased with your progress!

There is a highway that leads to Heaven! Get on board the train that's bound for Gloryland! It's a great ride!

Your Heavenly Father Loves You
This devotional was written by Jim Liebelt

God is love. — 1 John 4:16 (NIV)

An important reminder today: God is love. Surprised? I hope not, but in the midst of life’s situations – from the simple frustrations like being stuck in traffic on your way to a business appointment, or forgetting your homework to big life-dominating crises like a parent with cancer or a job that is making you miserable – it’s easy to forget that your heavenly father loves you more than anyone else!

God, our heavenly Father, loves each one of us better than any earthly father ever can. God wants us to think of Him and experience Him as our Daddy. In Romans 8:15, the Apostle Paul wrote, “For you did not receive a spirit of fear that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption. And by Him, we cry Abba Father.” (NIV) A literal way of translating the word Abba is Daddy – that close, intimate, loving word many kids use in addressing their fathers. God wants to be known as our ultimate Daddy.

To those who have been abused by the actions of your earthly fathers, let me encourage you, run to God – your heavenly father – who always loves you, always cares for you, and can always, always be trusted – even to the point where He will never, ever let you down.

Today, may we all find comfort and encouragement through the following descriptions of our heavenly Father found in the Scriptures:

“See how much our heavenly Father loves us, for he allows us to be called his children, and we really are!” 1 John 3:1 (NLT)

“The Lord is like a father to his children, tender and compassionate to those who fear him.” Psalm 103:13 (NLT)

“Even if my father and mother abandon me, the Lord will hold me close.” Psalm 27:10 (NLT)

“The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to get angry, full of unfailing love.” Psalm 145:8 (NLT)

“The Lord is good to everyone. He showers compassion on all his creation.” Psalm 145:9 (NLT)

“The Lord is faithful in all he says; he is gracious in all he does.” Psalm 145:13 (NLT)

“The Lord helps the fallen and lifts up those bent beneath their loads.” Psalm 145:14 (NLT)

“The Lord is close to all who call upon him.” Psalm 145:18 (NLT)

“O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive, so full of unfailing love for all who ask your aid.” Psalm 86:5 (NLT)

“Father to the fatherless, defender of widows–this is God, whose dwelling is holy.” Psalm 68:5 (NLT)

“As for God, his way is perfect. All the Lord’s promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to him for protection.” Psalm 18:30 (NLT)

GOING DEEPER:

1. Consider ways that God has demonstrated he has been a loving father to you.
2. Thank God for being your Heavenly Father.

Do all you can to preserve the unity of the Spirit by the peace that binds you together.

St Paul's epistle to the Ephesians is the epistle of Christian unity. In a true spirit of ecumenism, we see all Christians as called to work towards a true and deep sense of oneness and unity. We are called to be one Body, bonded together as brothers and sisters, children of one Father. Between us there should be a single inner source, that of one hope.

Do I lead a life worthy of my high calling as a Christian? Am I patient, understanding, tolerant, a peacemaker? Do I strive to preserve the unity of the Spirit?

Lord, teach me your ways. Keep me open and alert to your Spirit, alive and active today and every day.

All of You!

Then Jesus told the followers, "You will all lose your faith.
It is written {in the Scriptures }: 'I will kill the
shepherd, and the sheep will run away.'"

-- Mark 14:27 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Jesus knows that he will face the horrors of the Cross alone. He has no
illusions about what will happen. Scripture has foretold it. His heart
knows it. He lies on the verge of experiencing it. In Ray Overholt's
hymn, "Ten Thousand Angels," the truth of Jesus' words are powerfully
recognized: "He could have called ten thousand angels To destroy the
world and set Him free. He could have called, ten thousand angels, But
He died alone, for you and me." Jesus knows his death is coming. He
knows he will be abandoned, betrayed, and denied. He goes through it
anyway ... for us.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Loving Father and Almighty God, I am humbled and appreciative of the
incredible and sacrificial love your Son demonstrated for me. Please
accept my life as my thank you for such incredible grace. In Jesus'
name I pray. Amen.
