His Own

“For the sake of his great name the LORD will not reject his people, because the LORD was pleased to make you his own.”
1 Samuel 12:22

God in His great mercy has made us His own. He was pleased to make us His own. It was His desire to have us as His children. God’s love for us is so great that He was not willing to let us go. His love for us is so great that He still desires fellowship and intimacy with us. He longs for us to come home to Him. What kind of God is this who would not give up on such a rebellious people? What kind of God had all the power in the universe and yet he reached out in love to us? What kind of God would stoop to pick up some broken, worthless pieces and lovingly put them back together and miraculously make something of worth from them? Before God created the galaxies, he dreamed of us. All that He created, He created with us in mind. He prepared a very special place where he would have communion with his greatest creation, his children. This is the kind of God who will never let us go. Why? Because His name depends on it, the integrity of who He is is at stake! He was pleased to make us His own and we will be His, you can
count on it!

Father, thank you for dreaming of us before the foundation of the world. Thank you for putting this earth together for us. How much we take for granted! Help us to realize your intense love for us. Let it change us and transform us into faithful children. Help us to want you as much as you want us. Grant us that intense, burning love for you that you have for us. Bring us home, Father, that we might give you the desire of your heart. Amen Quiet Waters

HIS FRIEND

Friendship with the Lord is reserved for those who fear him.
With them he shares the secrets of his covenant.
My eyes are always looking to the Lord for help,
for he alone can rescue me from the traps of my enemies.
Turn to me and have mercy on me,
for I am alone and in deep distress.
My problems go from bad to worse.
Oh, save me from them all!
Feel my pain and see my trouble.
Forgive all my sins.
See how many enemies I have,
and how viciously they hate me!
Protect me! Rescue my life from them!
Do not let me be disgraced,
for I trust in you.
May integrity and honesty protect me,
for I put my hope in you.
Psalm 25:14-21

Can you imagine being friends with someone you are afraid of? Well, that is exactly what God wants for us. He wants us to move from being afraid of Him directly into an intimate relationship with a personal friend. Awesome!

People, this never hit me before, but it's hitting me now. According to this Psalm of David (the man after God's own heart), God only shares "the secrets of his covenant" with those He considers friends; people who aren't afraid to get intimate with Him.

David knew pain. David knew what it was like to walk down the street and be mocked by children and adults. Yet, David stood strong and in the end the Lord truly blessed him in spite of his many sins.

If we are going to be people of integrity and honesty we must be intimately acquainted with God through the salvation offered to us through Jesus and be empowered with the Holy Spirit.

As you go to worship Him this morning simply make yourself vulnerable to His will and way. Let Him be your friend!

Oh, God, to imagine being friends with You, the one and only Holy God, is beyond our comprehension. Yet, I know You are my Creator, my Father, and my Friend! I praise You and worship You! Empower me to serve You by loving others to Your glory! The Well

Being holy is highly preferable to being evil

Being holy is highly preferable to being evil, yet few they are who diligently seek for it.

Holiness is not an accident but a deliberate act done by a person who chooses to be holy.

The reproof of God leads to a pathway of holiness, a road filled with love and peace, that leads to Heaven.

The temptation of Satan leads to a path of wickedness, a road filled with hate, strife and grief, that leads to the fires of hell.

Brethren, choose this day which road you will follow and stick to it.

Don't be lukewarm and try to follow both roads, both good and evil.

Jesus said, " Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire."

Let us therefore seek to be holy and eschew all evil.

Amen.

Devotional For Dieters

October 26

1 Peter 4:1-2
Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.

Barney knew he could lose weight. He'd given up cigarettes, and that was the hardest thing he'd ever had to do. If he could do away with cigarettes, he was positive he could lose weight. A friend had once told him that if he was suffering, he knew he was on the right track. Nothing worth doing came easy. Barney asked God for strength as he set about losing weight. When he felt he was suffering the most, that's when he relied most heavily on God. A little suffering never hurt anyone, especially when it was done in order to attain good health.

A POWERFUL LESSON

“We will comprehend the word serenity and we will know peace.” Alcoholics Anonymous, page 84

"Submit to God and be at peace with him.” Job 22:21

For what it's worth: There was always a war inside of me with me, or outside of me with just about everybody else. I was always losing, but alcohol would deaden the pain of the wounds. However, my Creator must have been watching and knew I was dying, so He directed me to Alcoholics Anonymous. There I was blessed to be able to stop drinking and see and feel the damage I was inflicting on myself and others. As I did so, AA people told me about a Higher Power who could heal me, if only He were sought. I had to stop fighting, surrender my stubborn, false pride, and turn my will and my life over to God’s care. When I finally did, He immediately began treatment. He has done most of the work Himself, but, every now and then He refers me out to trusted professionals for the rest. Along the way, He has taught me a powerful lesson that will keep me from ever being at war with myself or anyone else, if I practice it. That lesson is this: the more I surrender to my Heavenly Father in my daily life, the more peace I find each day.

God bless you!

Today I will...say and do everything with one thought in mind— "to save his people from their sins."

The Spirit, Not the Letter

4 And we have such trust through Christ toward God. 5 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God, 6 who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit;[a] for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. 2 Corinthians 3

Do You Believe In Love?

MATTHEW 5:44 NKJ
44 "But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,

Most people believe in force: guns and armies.

Most people believe in money: "financial power."

Many people believe in education, that "If we just educate people enough we can change the world."

Hardly anyone seems to believe in the power of love to change things. No one seems to think it would do any good to "turn the other cheek."

Jesus didn't tell us to "turn the other cheek" just so we could get beat up more. Jesus believes in the power of love. Jesus believes that evil can be overcome with good.

ROMANS 12:20-21 NKJ
20 Therefore "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head."
21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

God still believes in the power of love. He believes that if you love enough, and for long enough, people will finally come to their senses and respond to that love.

JOHN 13:34-35 NIV
34 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."

Jesus said the mark of His believers would be their love. Where did we go wrong?

SAY THIS: Lord, help me to believe in love, and to act in love.

Find Courage.

As the days grew brighter, he used the affirmation, "Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart" (Psalm 27:14). The patient put his heart under God's care. God placed His healing hand upon this man's heart and renewed it.

Appreciate Your Calling
October 26

So we, numerous as we are, are one body in Christ (the Messiah) and individually we are parts one of another [mutually dependent on one another].
—Romans 12:5

Learn to appreciate the call of God on your life. He has a different call for everybody. None of us are called to do all the work that needs to be done, but we can each enjoy the assignments we are given. We can also enjoy the work God does through others.

Today holds an opportunity to mature in the knowledge of God and to enjoy whatever God has called you to do. Your part is needed. Ask God early in the day to show you where to use your gifts to help others.

NACR Daily Meditation

Sunday 26th of October 2008

See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.
Isaiah 43:19

Recovery involves a lot of hard work. Change and growth take effort.
But we are not doing all the work ourselves. God is also at work. God is
at our side in the process of healing.

Sometimes, of course, it seems like there is not much for God to work
with. We see our diseases and disfunctions clearly and wonder how anything
can be made out of this mess. But God is full of surprises. God can turn
the most unlikely of events and experiences into opportunities to bring
us new life and new hope.

Sometimes recovery seems like a desert wasteland, desolate, unproductive.
We can’t imagine that anything can grow here. The conditions are too hostile.
It is into just such situations that God comes. In a trackless wilderness,
God makes a way. In a parched wasteland, God causes a stream of water to
spring up. It is a remarkable thing when God finds a path for us when we
are completely lost. It is a remarkable thing when God provides nourishment
for us in a wasteland. But God does, time and time again.

God is doing a new thing in us. It may be difficult for us to perceive
at first. But little by little, day by day, new life and hope spring up.
God can take the pathless wasteland of our lives and grow a garden there.

"Do you see it?" God asks "Can you see how it springs
up? It will be a garden some day. It will yield a bountiful harvest."

I am not good at seeing it yet, Lord.
Will I bloom and grow?
Will my desert wasteland see a harvest?
Is there a path for me in this wilderness, Lord.
Are there streams of water here?
Surprise me, Lord.
And change me.
Give me the courage, hope and trust
to change a little today.
Amen.

Visualizing Your Heavenly Father’s Love

Zephaniah 3:17: “The Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.”

“All I ever wanted was for my parents, especially my father, to be proud of me,” said the business executive. “I never felt I was good enough. When I brought home a B he asked why it wasn’t an A. The night I missed a free throw and we lost the basketball championship by one point, he lectured me for three hours. I guess he was disappointed.”

Perhaps as a small child you wished your father would hold you and sing songs of comfort and love. Maybe you longed for him to take delight in your youthful accomplishments. Maybe you wanted him to go with you when you faced the neighborhood bully. Perhaps you needed him to affirm your love of theater instead of demanding you play sports. But it did not happen and you experienced great loss.

The words of Zephaniah are for you. Your heavenly Father is with you. He allows you all the room you need to be just who are, even though it is different from your brother or sister. God is delighted with you. Visualize him rocking you gently, calming your fears and singing happy songs of love and joy.

I’m loved
far more than I thought possible.
Thank you, Lord.

The Silly Monkey

"Fight! Fight!" shouted several children, and Keaton and Steve did just that. The scuffle didn't last long, though. They exchanged only a few punches before they were separated by Mrs. Hansen, their Sunday school teacher. "I'm very surprised at you boys," she said as she took them aside.

"Steve called me clumsy and stupid and . . . and a bunch of other bad names," complained Keaton.

"That's because you kicked me," retorted Steve angrily.

"I couldn't help it that your big feet got in my way," grumbled Keaton.

"And you called me Big Foot, too," Steve accused Keaton.

Mrs. Hansen frowned. "You boys know Joey Baker, don't you?" she asked.

Steve nodded. "The Bakers are missionaries in Brazil," he said.

"That's right," said Mrs. Hansen. "Did Joey ever tell you about the time he saw a monkey sitting on a log, cracking nuts with a stone?"

The boys laughed. "Yeah, and when the monkey noticed Joey watching him, he missed the nut and hit his tail with the stone," said Keaton. "I guess he blamed Joey for that."

Steve nodded. "And it made the monkey so mad that he threw the stone at Joey."

"Yes, and aren't you boys acting like the monkey-each blaming the other for something that was as much your own fault as anyone's?" asked Mrs. Hansen. Neither boy offered an answer. "What does God say you should do if somebody treats you wrongly?" continued their teacher. "Think about the memory verse we had a few weeks ago." Again, neither boy replied, so Mrs. Hansen quoted the verse. "It was Colossians 3:13. 'If anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.' How does Christ forgive? Keaton?"

"Ah-h-h . . . He forgives the minute we ask Him," said Keaton slowly. "But Steve didn't ask me to . . ." He stopped and looked at Steve. "Whoa!" he added with a small grin. "I didn't ask him, either. Sorry, Steve. Forgive me?"

"I . . . well . . . okay," replied Steve, "and you'll forgive me, too, won't you?"

Mrs. Hansen smiled. "Good," she approved. "It's nice to see you acting like Jesus rather than like a silly monkey."

HOW ABOUT YOU?
Do you get angry and blame someone else when things go wrong? Maybe that person isn't at fault at all. Instead of finding someone to blame, admit it when you're the one at fault. Even if someone else is to blame, follow Christ's example. He freely forgives when you ask Him to do so, and He never holds a grudge. Do as He did. Forgive and don't hold grudges.

TODAY'S KEY VERSE:
If anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. Colossians 3:13

Peter's Real Truth

Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth. Tonight you will say
you don't know me. You will say this three times before the
rooster crows twice."

-- Mark 14:30 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
"The truth is ..." Ouch! "You can't stand the truth!" is the old movie
line delivered by Jack Nicholson. I'm afraid we might not be able to
stand the full truth of our own weakness. Yet because of the
forgiveness of the Lord and power of the Holy Spirit, we can be
resilient and useable to the Master. Three denials do not mean forever
banishment from grace. They are just a sobering reminder of our
desperate need for honest humility and the power of God's Spirit.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O LORD, please give me the strength I need this day to be strong in
your service, faithful in my promises, and tender in my dealings with
others. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
