Sitting over coffee at a coffee shop following a meeting at the Jewish Community Centre, years ago, my cousin Carolyn and I were sharing where active addiction brought us both.
She had recently been released from a federal prison and was just completing a 90 day treatment programme in a women's treatment centre.
As we sat there, Carolyn was sharing with me the many close calls to death she had while using. She shared how she never wanted to go "there" again.
Carolyn was one of the addicts who didn't make it.
She struggled hard with recovery and in the end it won.
Around 12:30 AM Aug. 2, 2008, Carolyn left a party to go get more drugs. Her body was found in an alleyway five minutes from her home at 7:30 AM.
Her autopsy showed she had been brutally beaten to a pulp and then stabbed multiple times in her heart.
Carolyn's struggle ended at approximately 1:30 AM that morning, according to witnesses who later told police they heard her screams.
Her killer(s) have not yet been found and so we wait for justice.
And I thank Creator for giving my cousin some "good days" and some "necessary days", and for giving me the strength to accept this, one day at a time.
Rest in Peace, Carolyn.
