16 Moreover He called for a famine in the land;
He destroyed all the provision of bread.
17 He sent a man before them—
Joseph—who was sold as a slave.
18 They hurt his feet with fetters,
He was laid in irons.
19 Until the time that his word came to pass,
The word of the LORD tested him.
20 The king sent and released him,
The ruler of the people let him go free.
21 He made him lord of his house,
And ruler of all his possessions,
22 To bind his princes at his pleasure,
And teach his elders wisdom. Psalm 105

As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. Simon's mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told Jesus about her. So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them. That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. The whole town gathered at the door, and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was. Mark 1:29-34

God is Precious

To know You, Oh Father, is wonderful and to be able daily to come into Your Presence is a delight.
Renew a right spirit within me, Oh Lord, that I may abound in Your Love causing me to believe all things and hope all things.
I will put my whole trust in Thee, Oh God, and in Thee alone will I rely.
You are Precious beyond compare and your gentleness and tender hearted mercies toward me takes my breath away and inspires me with great awe.
You are my God and the dearest of all my friends.
There is no greater desire within me than to walk with Thee and to talk with Thee along life's narrow way.
Just a touch from Thee, Oh God, just a touch from Thee would from all my life's troubles and woes set me free.
God, You are Precious to me.
Amen.

Quiet Times

"Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge n him" (Psalms 24:8).

Some of my favorite times are those quiet times when I feel myself engulfed by the warm love of God. His arms wrapped around me, holding me near to Him. He is truly a loving Father.
His love for us is never-ending. His grace is immeasurable. As His children, we should all know what it means to "taste and see that the Lord is good." This is often hard to do as we are so distracted by the cares of this life. But if we could just clear our minds and focus on God and His goodness, we might begin to understand this a little more each time we come to Him in those blessed quiet times.

Quiet Times

Quiet fills the house
as each have gone their separate ways
yet I am not afraid
within the quiet of this still embrace.
I bask in the warm hug
the emptiness provides,
and slip into the silence
to hide and seek alone.
A cup of coffee and my easy chair
prepare to add to this enchanting bliss.
I sink myself into them both,
a sweet kiss of morning love.
Revealing now in unchurned air
I move my hand as to beckon the letters
from the table drawer.
I open them and soon begin
to drink in every letter--every word.
Raising eyes briefly time to time
to query my aloneness in secure.
I feel enjoined within the hour
to my gracious God,
through love and letters,
within His living Word.

Quiet fills the house,
and all have gone their separate ways.
And I am loved
within the quiet of this lasting still embrace.

Today, take time to be with God. Tell Him you love Him. Tell Him what you love about Him. And lose yourself in His love. Be sure to clear your mind of all distractions. If you do not think that will be easy, ask God to help. You will not be disappointed. Just taste, and see that the Lord is good.

Read Genesis 13 -- 15 http://www.studylight.org/desk/?l=en&query=ge+13-ge+15&section=0&translation=kjv&oq=

Highlights In Today's Reading:

A life-changing message is found in today's reading! See the blessings increase as Abram allows Lot to take advantage of him rather than fight for his rights.

Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren (13:18). The strife was a result of their prosperity, which often reveals hidden spiritual problems. But this strife gave Abram an opportunity to express his faith in God by making peace with Lot. He was much older than his nephew and was also the spiritual leader; therefore, he could rightfully have taken the best for himself. Instead, he graciously offered Lot the choice. And note, he didn't "preach" to him about his greed.

Lot is an example of the worldly-minded, professing Christian. Like so many today, he was more concerned over material gain that he was over spiritual blessings. When the opportunity came, he took advantage of the generosity of his beloved uncle Abram, chose the best land, and pitched his tent toward Sodom (13:12). Lot never recovered from that disastrous decision. He did not pray or consult the Lord about this decision. When he departed from Abram, he became much more influenced by the world, as shown in the fact that he obtained a position of prominence, sitting in the gate of Sodom (19:1). His desire was to have all the fertile valley (13:11); nothing less would satisfy him. Humanly speaking, it appeared that Abram had given everything to Lot (13:11). But Abram's faith and gracious attitude toward Lot was eventually rewarded (13:14-17; 15:1-5,17-21).

The devil desires to make us believe we must grab for the best. But the people who place their faith in God have no need to fight for their rights. No one loses out by putting God first in his life! I can assure you that the forces of evil do not want us to believe that when we trust in the Lord, we have chosen the best way to live (Luke 10:42). But, with the Lord's enabling, we can live victoriously even with our losses, our problems, our heartaches, and our pressures.

In the eyes of the world, Lot's gain was Abram's loss. But Abram's victory is shown in that it was he who later rescued Lot (chapter 14), rather than the other way around. Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God (I Cor. 1:3-4).

Thought for Today:

Abram gave the first tithe recorded in Scripture as a worshipful act of praise and thanksgiving to God. Do we express God's worth by giving our tithes?

Christ Portrayed:

By the high priest, Melchizedek (Gen. 14:18-20; Heb. 4:15-16; 5:5-10; 7:1-4). Today Christ is our High Priest who is interceding in prayer for us and He alone is deserving of our gifts and service to Him.

Word Studies:

13:6 bear = support; 14:5 smote = subdued; 14:18 Salem = Jerusalem; 14:20 tithes = gifts of the first 10% of all material or financial increase; 14:22 I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD = Abraham made an oath (promise) to God; 15:3 seed = descendants; 15:4 thine own bowels = your own body; 15:5 tell = count; 15:13 stranger = temporary resident; 15:14 great substance = wealth; 15:15 go to thy fathers = die; 15:16 full = complete; iniquity = sin.

HEAVY Get Help to Lift

Galatians 6:2
Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

Being a Burden Lifter
You would think I would get the hang of packing for the airlines after a few trips, but it only seems to be moving from bad to worse. After each trip I make mental notes: 1) Do not pack that item again, you didn’t use it anyway. 2) Don’t forget these items, it would have been nice to have them along. The last two trips my suitcase came back to me marked with an orange tag: HEAVY Get Help To Lift.
Now, I knew my suitcase was heavy, but was it really necessary to inform all my fellow travelers standing around the carousel?
Wouldn’t it be helpful if hurting people were as easily identifiable as tagged suitcases? They know their burdens are heavy. Sometimes so heavy they can hardly lift themselves out of bed in the morning. But how can others know they are hurting? Maybe these people, maybe you and I, should begin clearly marking our oppressive days with an orange tag: HEAVY BURDENS Need Help to Lift!
There’s no guesswork in the Bible on if we should help carry each other’s burdens. Galatians 6:2 commands us to do so, Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
The question is how do we obey that command without the use of orange tags identifying those who need help with their heartaches and burdens? Let’s again go to the Bible for God’s Word on burden lifting.
Ask the Holy Spirit to clothe you with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience (Colossians 3:12). Have the attitude of Christ, looking not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others (Philippians 2). Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God (Ephesians 5:1-2).
Would orange tags make it easier to identify the hurting people in your corner of the world? It certainly would. But is it the best option? No, God always provides the best way. Follow God’s commands for burden lifting, imitate Christ’s example in how He reached out to others, and let the Spirit lead and guide as you go about the task you’ve been called to: being a burden lifter for others.

Today’s Prayer:
Father God, thank You for Your word on burden lifting. Please help me to see the burdens that people are carrying. Give me eyes to see where the needs are. Give me ears to hear the cries of hurting people. Give me love that reaches out in compassion and understanding. I want to imitate Jesus. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Actually, Money Can Buy Happiness

"If there is a poor man among your brothers in any of the towns of the land that the LORD your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward your poor brother." - Deuteronomy 15:7

Here's an interesting newspaper article I recently read. A research team at Harvard Business School has found that spending as little as five dollars a day on others will significantly boost your own personal happiness. A psychologist heading the study said, "We wanted to test the theory that how people spend their money is at least as important as how much money they earned." So they had their subjects make a list of income as well as detailed expenditures, especially donations to charity and gifts to others. Then they rated their levels of happiness and there you have it - the more you spend on others the happier you'll be.

I'm not sure how much this study cost, but I think we could have saved them a whole bunch of money. In God's Word, Jesus has already said, "It's a lot more blessed to give than to receive." (Acts 20:35) Giving to God - giving to others - is a sure-fired way to a happier, more fulfilling life.

The Day of Rest

Bible Reading: Genesis 2:2-3; Psalm 62:1,5; 91:1; Matthew 11:28;

We are told in the Bible that God never slumbers or sleeps, nor does He grow weary. Why then, did He find it necessary to rest on the seventh day after the work of creating that He had done? I believe He did it as an example to us. We are not omnipotent. We grow weary and need rest. We also need time to delight in what we have accomplished during the week. But most importantly, we need time to come aside and commune with God. If you are not resting one day a week, you are missing an essential blessing.

Moment of Meditation: Both work and rest are essential to a successful Christian walk.

A Talk with Jesus: Jesus, when I am weary, I rest in You. I delight in what You have accomplished through me. I worship You. Amen.

For Further Study: Exodus 33:14; Joshua 21:44; 1 Kings 5:4; Isaiah 11:10; 30:15; 32:18; Jeremiah 6:16; Mark 2:27.

The Light of God’s Word
by Momong

Matthew 4: 12-17, 23-25
1Jn.3:22—4:6 / Psa 2

…the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.
(Matthew 4:16)

Lord, let Your light shine upon us
To help us make Your Word be known;
As we bring more souls to Jesus,
Let no none among us walk alone.

Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, He withdrew into Galilee; and leaving Nazareth He went and dwelt in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, toward the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles –- the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.” From that time on, Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” And he went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people. So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and pains, demoniacs, epileptics, and paralytics, and he healed them. And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judea and from beyond the Jordan.
Reflection

As St. John the Baptist had predicted — “He must increase; I must decrease” (Jn. 3:30) — Jesus began to expand His ministry as John’s role started to diminish. John was the harbinger of the Messiah, but his star must fade first before the Lord’s would shine. “He moved from Nazareth to make His home in Capernaum by the sea” because He was rejected by His own townsmen (Jn.4:44- A prophet has no honor in his native place), and to fulfill scriptures: “The coastlands will wait for His teaching” (Isa.42:4). Before Jesus came to Galilee, the people there were in darkness, because the Gospel had not yet been preached to them. His preaching of repentance, coupled with healings of all kinds of disease and affliction was the great light that had dawned upon them.

Before Christ and His teachings came into our lives, we were still in darkness. When we joined the BCBP community it was because we felt a great need to be reconciled with God once again, to put some meaning into our lives. We listened to His message, and learned to be truly penitent of our sins. And with our support group to help us, we found true peace of mind and soul. Jesus healed us, just as He did the thousands in Capernaum in Galilee. But our healing was just the beginning. After the Spirit tested and strengthened our commitment, we found that it was not only for our renewal that the Lord had called us; He was commissioning us into His service, in order to follow Him perfectly.

We have discovered the great light of the Gospel of Jesus, and it is now directing our lives. If we are to follow Him, we must spread this light to others who are still sitting in the darkness of sin, and who are still not aware of their need for repentance. This was and still is the message of Isaiah and the prophets of old, of John the Baptist, and of our Lord Jesus Christ: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.” This is the vital message that all must heed to start the year right: Repent of all sinful ways of the past in order to start anew. May we live this new year in Christ’s eternal light.

Loving Father, we look back in repentance and look forward in hope, knowing that You have forgiven our sins as we strive to follow Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ in all His teachings. Bless our new year with a new sense of purpose in the power of Your Spirit. Amen.

“THERE BUT FOR THE GRACE OF GOD”

“But for the grace of God, there would have been thousands more convincing demonstrations.” Alcoholics Anonymous, page25

“You live under the freedom of God’s grace.” Roman 6:14

For what it's worth: What I am today I never thought possible. Moreover, what I am today has nothing to do with me. When I was running the show, all hell was loose and running rampant. Fortunately, the pain back then was so severe I had to find relief, and ended up, of all places, with a bunch of drunks in Alcoholics Anonymous. That is the best spot on earth that I could have been. There I was accepted just as the mess I was. More significantly, there I found my heart’s desire: love and self-worth. Actually, it is more accurate to say that my heart’s desire was given to me rather than I found it. Because it is a gift, freely given, no strings attached, that I certainly did nothing to deserve. To receive the gift, I was saved from what I deserved. So easily I could have ended up like so many of my suffering brothers in a padded cubicle or a locked cell, being eaten alive from the inside out for killing someone while driving drunk, probably in a blackout. There but for the Grace of God!

God bless you!

The Master Builder
January 5

For [of course] every house is built and furnished by someone, but the Builder of all things and the Furnisher [of the entire equipment of all things] is God.
—Hebrews 3:4

God is the Master Builder. Jesus is the Chief Cornerstone. God is the one who has to build us and equip us for the work of the Lord Jesus Christ. In Philippians 1:6 the apostle Paul writes to assure us, "He Who began a good work in you will continue until the day of Jesus Christ [right up to the time of His return], developing [that good work] and perfecting and bringing it to full completion in you." What he was saying to us is simply this: "It was God who started this work in you, and it is God who will finish it!" That means we should leave God alone to do His work. We need to stay out of His business and mind our own.

There are certain things only God can do. We are to do our part and let Him do His. We are to handle our responsibility but cast our care on Him. We are to confess our sins and failures to the Lord, confident that He will forgive us of those sins and failures and cleanse us from all unrighteousness, as He has promised in His Word (1 John 1:9). We are to trust to Him the job of perfecting us for the work He has for us to do in this life. That takes the pressure off of us, which relieves us of the worry and anxiety we feel so often as we try to perfect ourselves.

Death By Overwork

Luke 9:25: “What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet …forfeit his very self?”

The Japanese have a name for it. It’s called karoshi, or death by overwork. In the climb to be the most productive nation in the world, individual Japanese people have forfeited much. Many have sacrificed family life as well as their own lives. According to some reports, the death toll has been as high as ten thousand per year. These people are driven by the corporate leadership to routinely work overtime, take little or no vacation, work weekends, ignore physical signs of stress, and never complain. The heartbroken families have recently begun to say that the price for gaining the world’s admiration is too high.

We would do well to learn from this human disaster. Are you and I forgoing healthy relationships with our spouses, children and family for the sake of our work addiction and perfectionism? Some of us overwork to obtain economic superiority. Most of us overwork to prove our value, desperate to gain approval and respect. What is your rationale for obsessive work habits? Is it worth the price?

Lord, my family and life mean more to me than “gaining the whole world.”
But I’ve become so entrenched in this way of life, I don’t know how to stop.
I don’t want to commit karoshi.
Please give me courage and direction.

When God Says “Go”

By Marilyn Ehle

The Lord said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go the land I will show you - I will bless you - and you will be a blessing…” Genesis 12:1

It made no “common sense” for Susan to submit a resignation. She had recently received a promotion. She is multi-talented, recognized in her field as an expert. Her creative genius is seen in many multi-million dollar homes in the area. On a personal level, she has been mentor, friend and encourager to those just starting out in the design field.

So why is she resigning? Some might say she is running from what had become an increasingly difficult work environment. Others would wonder if she’s lost the competitive edge so necessary in much of the business world. Or could it be that she—as a Christ-follower—has simply heard Him say, “It’s time to move on. I have something else for you now.”

To leave a position, place or situation when God says, “Go,” is often misunderstood. Sometimes even the one leaving wonders if this “makes sense.” Long ago one man heard such a word from God, and his willingness to follow was miraculously turned into blessing that follows us even today. It made no “common sense” to leave the comfort of home and family, to give up that which provided security, but Abram went and became a blessing.

And so goes Susan. The blessing is not yet seen, but God never calls without purpose and plan.

“Thank you, Father, that we can trust your call in our lives. Help us be sensitive to your voice and faithful to follow.”

Guidance
I enter this new year with confidence, knowing that God lights my way.
In times of change or even turmoil, I may examine my plans or reexamine myself, wondering, Why is this happening? What can I do? What's next?
Placing all wondering and questioning aside, I realize that divine wisdom is always present to illumine my way. In prayerful meditation, I obtain a serene balance between questions and solutions. I acknowledge the peace within that soothes my soul.
I feel the calm assurance of divine insight and the tranquility of trust in outcomes. God is always here. Whether or not the details are obvious to me, I am ready to move forward confidently with my plans and understanding. I anticipate the known and trust in God for the unknown.
"May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us, that your way may be known upon earth."--Psalm 67:1-2

The Flow of Life

Read John 7:37-38

Jesus said, "Those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. ... [It] will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life."
-John 4:14 (NRSV)

MY wife wrung her hands in despair. "Not another country problem!" Our house has a 210-foot drilled well with delicious, clean water. The water pressure had become so weak we thought the underground spring had run dry or changed direction. Our neighbor suggested that it might be a minor problem that any plumber could repair. We called, and the plumber withdrew the excess water in the tank and added air, which increased the water pressure to maintain a steady flow of water throughout the house.

This experience reminded me that Jesus said that I have access to a spring of spiritual water that will never fail if I maintain contact with him. Prayer renews the Holy Spirit within me, without which I shrivel up and die. Christ within me is the wellspring of eternal life. As supplying water to our home depended on keeping the pressure adequate, my supply of life-giving water depends on keeping in daily contact with Christ through prayer.

Donald Roy Buxcey (Ontario, Canada)
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, remind us daily to make room for the flow of your Holy Spirit. Amen.

Thought for the Day
The water of life can flow through us to refresh others.

The Plea of Love

O Israel, return unto the Lord thy God.
HOSEA 14:1

The famous nineteenth-century Baptist preacher, C. H. Spurgeon, said that throughout the book of Hosea there is thunder, sometimes a low rumbling, sometimes peal on peal. We would expect the book to close with a fearful declaration of judgment on impenitent Israel, but, surprisingly, it is the voice of pleading that we hear in the last chapter. It is hard for God to watch people that He has loved and favoured go on in their rebellion and be ruined. And it is hard for God to watch us, whom He has created, going astray to our own shame and loss. To stop Israel (and us) from going further away, God pleads most tenderly, O Israel, return unto the Lord thy God.

Sometimes we become so taken up with the thought of the impending doom of the ungodly that we forget that God is longsuffering and has no pleasure in the death of the wicked. The American evangelist D. L. Moody once allowed a young preacher called Henry Moorhouse to preach for him while he was away. When Moody returned, he asked his wife how young Moorhouse was doing. She said that people liked him because he told them that God loved them. Moody was upset and felt that Henry Moorhouse was wrong. But when he heard him for himself his attitude changed, and D. L. Moodys preaching was never the same again.

How precious it is to think that God cares so much for creatures who have sinfully wandered away from Him! God even tells us what we are to say when we come back. We must say, Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously (v. 2). And God promises that if we return in that spirit, He will heal our backsliding and love us freely.

If you want to discover how much God loves you, read the fourteenth chapter of Hosea.

The God of heaven is slow to anger, and is especially loth to abandon a people to utter ruin that have been in special relation to Him.
Matthew Henry

in the U.S. (International):

Jesus hears that John has been jailed. He realizes his time has come.
He begins by quoting Isaiah, chapter 8. He is the light who has come into our lives, which are so often overshadowed by death, in so many ways.

In this week after Epiphany, let us keep letting the Light shine into the places of darkness within us and around us. And where we have seen and felt his enlightening, freeing presence, let us continue to rejoice with Christmas joy.

Radiance.
Your radiant light blazes in my world today. I know I will have difficult times and the darkness will gather around me again. But today the shining light of your love
comes into my life and frees me.

There are other days that are shadowy, when I don't always know where I am going, Lord.
When the gloom gathers in my life, lead me through it.
I will reach out my hand in the darkness, put aside my fears
and walk next to you, comforted by your presence
and the warmth of your unending love.

-----

It is amazing how we can become adjusted to the dark. Whether it’s the gradual shift from evening to nighttime or the way we grope around when we first enter an unlit room, we gradually become accustomed to the darkness and find some way to keep functioning.

We accept the limitations of the darkness and muddle through the best we can.

What a powerful metaphor for the Sacrament of Reconciliation! Long-standing or repeated sin can create a gathering darkness in our hearts that keeps us stumbling through life, muddling through the best we can. But this isn’t God’s desire for us. Through Confession, he invites us to step out of that darkness and into his glorious light.

We may think that we are doing okay in the darkness because we are accustomed to it. We have learned how to cope with it, and our lives seem to go on unhindered. So why bother dredging up the sin? Why bother trying to change? Because life is so much easier in the light. Because staying in the darkness limits our freedom and places a heavy shroud over our relationship with God. Just as we would be foolish to choose the unending darkness of night or an unlit room, we would not want to live in the guilt and shame of sin.

But there’s more to the Sacrament of Reconciliation than simply receiving God’s forgiveness. Confession also opens us to his healing power. Whatever our “sickness” is—whatever mind-sets we have that keep us distant from the Lord—Jesus wants to heal us, just as he healed the physical sicknesses of those who came to him. Scripture calls these mind-sets strongholds (2 Corinthians 10:4). In fact, there is a strong link between being forgiven for individual sins and seeing these sinful strongholds weakened or destroyed.

The good news is that the kingdom of heaven is at hand! It is there for anyone who steps out of the darkness of sin and into the light of God’s love and mercy. And it all begins with a few simple words: “Bless me, Father, for I have sinned…”

“Holy Spirit, give me a soft heart that is ready to repent and to know the outpouring of mercy that you have for me.”

1 John 3:22–4:6;
 Psalm 2:7-8,10-12

Today's Prayer
Dear God, I know you are able...able to move mountains, to speak creation into existence, to heal the sick, save the lost, to meet every need I have. I commit myself to you. I pray for all the people around the world, plagued by turmoil, wars, illness, lack of basic needs, insecurity and fear, and addictions that enslave. Lord, You alone know best how to meet these needs and solve these dilemmas. I pray that You would intervene, that people would be drawn to You, and that You would give them rest and healing, safety and security, a sound mind and a hopeful future. I pray that you would help me to see who you want me to minister to today and offer a hand of fellowship, a ray of light, or whatever You want to offer through me. Thank you, Lord, for meeting my needs. In Jesus' name I pray, amen.

Discovering Your Purpose
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 2, by Os Hillman
01-05-2009

"You know me inside and out, you know every bone in my body; You know exactly how I was made, bit by bit, how I was sculpted from nothing into something" (Psalm 139: 15). (Msg)

If you are going to discover how God wants to use your life and work, you must know why you were created. If you start trying to determine your purpose in life before understanding why you were created, you will inevitably get hung up on the things you do as the basis for fulfillment in your life, which will only lead to frustration and disappointment.

First and foremost, God created you to know Him and to have an intimate relationship with Him. In fact, God says that if a man is going to boast about anything in life, "boast about this: that he understands and knows me" (Jer. 9:24). Mankind's relationship with God was lost in the Garden when Adam and Eve sinned. Jesus' death on the cross, however, allows us to restore this relationship with God and to have an intimate fellowship with Him. The apostle Paul came to understand this when he said, "I gave up all that inferior stuff so I could know Christ personally, experience his resurrection power, be a partner in his suffering, and go all the way with him to death itself" (Phil. 3:10, THE MESSAGE).

Establishing this relationship with God is vital to understanding your purpose. If you don't have this relationship with God, you will seek to fulfill your purpose out of wrong motives; such as fear, insecurity, pride, money, relationships, guilt, or unresolved anger. God's desire is for you to be motivated out of love for Him and to desire to worship Him in all that you do. As you develop your relationship with God, He will begin to reveal His purpose for your life. "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord" (Jer. 29:11).

Today, ask God to help you discover your unique purpose.

Treason in Heaven

Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? . . . or who laid its cornerstone, when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? Job 38:4-7, RSV. {LHU 19.1}

Many of Lucifer's sympathizers were inclined to heed the counsel of the loyal angels and repent of their dissatisfaction and be again received to the confidence of the Father and His dear Son. The mighty revolter then declared that he was acquainted with God's law, and if he should submit to servile obedience, his honor would be taken from him. No more would he be entrusted with his exalted mission. He told them that himself and they also had now gone too far to go back, and he would brave the consequences, for to bow in servile worship to the Son of God he never would; that God would not forgive, and now they must assert their liberty and gain by force the position and authority which was not willingly accorded to them.

The loyal angels hastened speedily to the Son of God and acquainted Him with what was taking place among the angels. They found the Father in conference with His beloved Son, to determine the means by which, for the best good of the loyal angels, the assumed authority of Satan could be forever put down. The great God could at once have hurled this archdeceiver from heaven; but this was not His purpose. He would give the rebellious an equal chance to measure strength and might with His own Son and His loyal angels. In this battle every angel would choose his own side and be manifested to all. It would not have been safe to suffer any who united with Satan in his rebellion to continue to occupy heaven. They had learned the lesson of genuine rebellion against the unchangeable law of God, and this is incurable. . . .

Then there was war in heaven. The Son of God, the Prince of heaven, and His loyal angels engaged in conflict with the archrebel and those who united with him. The Son of God and true, loyal angels prevailed; and Satan and his sympathizers were expelled from heaven. All the heavenly host acknowledged and adored the God of justice. Not a taint of rebellion was left in heaven. All was again peaceful and harmonious as before. . . .

The Father consulted His Son in regard to at once carrying out their purpose to make man to inhabit the earth (The Story of Redemption, pp. 16-19).

Satan's rebellion was to be a lesson to the universe through all coming ages--a perpetual testimony to the nature of sin and its terrible results. The working out of Satan's rule, its effects upon both men and angels, would show what must be the fruit of setting aside the divine authority. It would testify that with the existence of God's government is bound up the well-being of all the creatures He has made (Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 42, 43).

Character Education: A Fresh Start

But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds. Psalm 73:28

Welcome to a brand new year! There is something invigorating about this time; we feel as though we get a fresh start.

Many of us take this opportunity to make plans to “clean up the mess” in of our lives. Maybe your goal is to lose weight, get organized, or take control of your finances. These are great resolutions!

While you’re making your plans for this year, let me suggest another goal that you might not have considered: clean out and correct faulty notions of God that you carry around in your heart and mind.

How does this happen? Without even giving the matter any thought, we naturally begin to decide for ourselves what God must be like based on what we see around us and what we learn through our life experiences. We make inferences—large and small—with regard to His character, just as we do with other human beings. However, God is not human (Num. 23:19). So, although we can see glimpses of Him in others, we cannot accurately see the “big picture” in others.

What should we do? For those who are just beginning to wonder what this “Jesus” is all about, the seasoned believers, and those who, like me, are relatively recent additions to the flock, the answer is the same: open God’s Word and learn what He says about Himself. After all, He is the authority on the subject, and He has given us the Bible to help us on just such occasions (2 Tim. 3:16).

This week, we’ll move toward the goal together. I’m going to show you several areas that I have struggled with (and sometimes still do). I’ll also share some of the comfort that I’ve received from God’s Word. We can anchor everything about ourselves in Him, because He never changes (Mal. 3:6, Jas. 1:17, Ps. 90:1-2).

I pray that you will be inspired to learn more about your own “tender spots” and search the Scriptures to see how completely God covers each of them with His love.

Together, we can learn to set aside what we “feel” or assume and replace it with what God declares to be true. Will you join me?

Dear Lord, please open my eyes, my ears, and my heart to experience anew the truth of who You really are. Thank you for providing your Word to light the way (Ps. 119:105).

God Sees You

Read Genesis 16:1 through 18:33

What if you could see God, the Creator of the universe, putting aside everything else He is doing and directing His attention specifically to you? Would it amaze you to realize God really does connect with you that personally?

That’s the beauty of His infinite wisdom, power, and love. God is able to direct the cosmos while simultaneously giving you His complete loving attention and making your life His priority.

In the grand sweep of Genesis 16 through 18, God set in motion the destiny of nations. But He also helped a frightened servant girl who was running alone into the wasteland of life. When God asked Hagar about her past and her future, Hagar admitted she was simply running away from her problems (Genesis 16:8).

Then God gave compassionate guidance. Hagar realized she was living under God’s watchful, loving gaze (verse 13). And so are you.

Let God’s Holy Spirit quietly prod your memory of where you have been, and gently direct where you are going. As you listen, you will find comfort and discover new purpose.

Challenge for Today: Overcome discouragement by remembering God’s love for you.

The Scandal Maker
January 5th
READ: Mark 2:13-3:6

While Jesus was having dinner at Levi's house, many tax collectors and "sinners" were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him (Mark 2:15).

This evidently was a farewell dinner Matthew gave for his friends, his tax-collecting buddies. He was saying farewell to his work and friends and leaving to follow Jesus, the one who would travel from place to place. It was also an opportunity to introduce them to his newfound Lord.

What a collection of rascals must have been there that day! All the tax collectors of the city, all the sinners, all the despised social outcasts were sitting there. As the scribes of the Pharisees passed by, they saw that right in the midst of it all, among the "beer bottles" and the "poker chips," sat Jesus. And they were absolutely scandalized! It was obvious that He was the friend of these men. He was not lecturing them. He was sitting among them and eating and drinking with them. The scribes were simply appalled at this and called the disciples aside: "Why does he do things like that? Doesn't he know who these people are?"

Jesus' answer is very revealing. He actually agrees with their remarks. He says, in effect, "You're right, these are sick, hurting, troubled men. Their style of life has damaged them deeply.

They don't see life rightly; they are covering up many evils; they are false in many ways. You're right, these are sick men. But where else would a doctor be?"

He says something to them that rightly focuses their attention and turns their gaze back toward themselves. He says, "I came

to call not the righteous, but sinners." That is, those who think they are righteous, as these Pharisees did, are actually more needy than those they regard as social outcasts. These Pharisees were actually more deeply disturbed than the tax collectors and sinners, but they did not know it. But Jesus was saying to them, "To those who think they're righteous, I have absolutely nothing to say. But to these who know they're sick and are open for help, I am fully available as a minister to their souls."

Our Lord made several things emphatically clear by this reply. First, He indicated strongly that when people think they have no need of help from God, they are in no position to be helped. There is nothing to say to them. But our Lord always put His efforts where men and women were open to help, where they were hurting so much they knew they needed help.

The second thing our Lord reveals is that people are more important than prejudice. Prejudices are preconceived notions formed before we have sufficient knowledge, usually mistaken or distorted ideas with which we have grown up. When prejudices are in opposition to the needs of people, they are to be swept aside without any hesitation. We Christians must learn to treat people like this--regardless of what their outward appearance may be. That is the way Jesus approached people everywhere.

Father, thank You for Jesus' courage, which dared to challenge human traditions. Grant that I may see myself and others as You see us--sick people in need of a physician.

This daily devotion was inspired by one of Ray's sermons.

Conversational Prayer-Sonnets and Scriptures

January 5 ~

I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand ... making me captive to the law of sin which dwells in my members ... Who will rescue me from the body that brings me to this death? Thank God - He does it through our Lord Jesus Christ!
Rom.7:21,23 (RSV); 7:24,25 (Beck)

By Default

Be sure of this, my soul: The evil one,
whom God deems necessary to assign
to thee - the foe that thou must overcome -
is wicked, totally, by God’s design,
the antonym of all that’s pure and true,
the nether millstone ’gainst which thou art ground ...
Be sure of this: Midst all thou think and do,
he waits for thee. ’Tis by default he’s found!
Into his grasp thou sink whene’er thou let
thy focus shift t’ward darkness from the Light:
whene’er God’s Presence thou ignore, forget
and see through human eyes ’stead those of Christ ...

One Hope hast thou if life and peace thou’d find:
Upon thy Lord - on Jesus - stay thy mind!

For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace ... Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty ... we do not preach ourselves but Christ Jesus as Lord ... "I am the ... truth" ... "the devil ... was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him ... he is a liar, and the father of lies" ... "His heart is hard as a stone, hard as the nether millstone" ... Leviathan the twisting serpent ... the dragon that is in the sea ... that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world ... Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist steadfast in the faith ... Looking unto Jesus ... Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee ...

About thanksgiving every day…
Psalm 69:30 I will praise God's name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving. 31 This will please the Lord more than an ox, more than a bull with its horns and hoofs. (NIV)

Thanksgiving is not just a holiday in November. Thanksgiving is a life giving process of surveying the wonders of God's beautiful love. Thanksgiving is a spiritual lifestyle lifting your soul towards Heaven. Thanksgiving is the ability to see the small flickering lights of love in the hearts of little children. Thanksgiving is the process of waiting on God for a long enough time to see Him work in situations, places and lives where there is no earthly hope of ever seeing God. Thanksgiving is a process of counting marvelous blessings when our heart aches from the traumas and tragedies of life.

Affirmation To Live In Thanksgiving Every Hour…
Every day I shall live in thanksgiving as I survey the wonders of God.

A Prayer For Growth Through Service
Precious Lord Jesus, Wonderful God, Empowering Holy Spirit…
My Lord Jesus,
You who are my only source of life in this world,
I bear so little fruit for you.
In ways I do not understand, I try but fail to do as I want to do.
In whatever fashion you would will it, turn me into your hands, your voice, and your heart for others.
I do not relish the pain of doing what you want me to do.
However, in all the ways you need me to reach out to others, turn my life over and help me be your humble child.
Grow me when I do not want to grow.
Inspire me when I do not want to be inspired.
Touch me when I do not want to be touched.
Direct me when I do not want to be directed.
Teach me when I do not want to be taught.
Help me to see you and know you more.
Help me to realize your will is the way to heaven and everlasting life.
Help me to see my human way is the way of death and destruction.
Help me to see your divine way is the way to prosperity.
All these things I humbly pray, in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
