Review of Clarence Henry Snyder’s Holy Bible

[Preliminary acknowledgement and comments about the source of this Bible: First, my son Ken and I have been working with Ken R., an AA from Alabama, in reviewing and editing the introduction to his forthcoming “Holy Grail”—the actual Printers Manuscript of the Big Book which Ken purchased at auction for almost a million dollars. Second, during our editing work, Ken purchased the Clarence Snyder Bible from a dealer; and the dealer had acquired it from Ohio Old-timer Ed Andy who had the Bible in his museum in Lorain, Ohio. Ed Andy was a good friend of Clarence’s, one of the early AAs, and established what Ed called “the first” A.A. museum. I personally participated in a phone conversation with Ed in which he confirmed that early AAs were required to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour before they could belong to the pioneer Akron A.A. Christian Fellowship founded on June 10, 1935. We were told Ed served as a consultant in the filming of the Bill W. story a few years ago. We were also told the Bible was given to Ed at the time of Clarence’s death. Finally, learning of my own extensive involvement with the history, activities, papers, and retreats of the venerable A.A. old-timer Clarence H. Snyder, Ken graciously sent to the Bible to me for review and such purpose as I might see fit. Now, that review has been completed in this draft form; and the Bible is being returned to Ken, its rightful owner. This preliminary note expresses great appreciation to Ken for acquiring the Bible, sending it to professionals for preservation work, and then allowing us to have it in our possession for this work of review. His generous sharing will come as a boon to hundreds, if not thousands, who want to know more about Clarence H. Snyder, the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous in Cleveland, Ohio. Also about Clarence’s being a Christian from birth, being a long-time Bible student, and one who used the Bible, the Oxford Group 4 Absolutes, the Big Book, and the Twelve Steps to make early A.A. sing and grow in Cleveland beginning in May, 1939 just after the Big Book was published.]

The Bible Itself

The first page of the Bible contains these inscriptions:

This Bible was presented to Clarence Henry Snyder by His Mother on His Sixth Birthday which is today the 26th day of December 1908 at 1280 E. 89th St. Cleveland Ohio.

Clarence Henry was Baptised with Water of the River of Jordan by Rev. Charles Bayard Mitchell of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Euclid Avenue Cleveland O. at 1280 E. 89th on Sunday Jan’y Fourth, 1903.

The title page states it is “The Holy Bible Containing the Old and New Testaments, appointed to be read in churches.” (New York: Thomas Nelson & Sons). It contains two inscriptions. One is in blue ink and states “Acts 16-31 (You & house).” The second is in red ink and states “Satan’s Rebellion Isaiah 14 Ezekiel 28. On the reverse side, there are a number of remarks and citations which include the following: (1) “Confess Repent Cast Out Obey.” (2) “Malachi 3 – 10” [In the Bible on page 598 in the Book of Malachi, Clarence wrote in Red ink: “Read 5/7/76 I shall pour you out a blessing!”]. (3) Luke 24 – 47 [the verse is checked in the Bible]. (4) Acts 2:38 [the verse is underlined in red in the Bible]. (5) Ps. Chapt. 32 & 51. (6) Some of the page is torn, but the legible inscriptions are these: (7) “Mark 11:23 [This is the ‘faith to move mountains’ verse, and is checked in the verse itself]. (8) “Break the curse Quote the Word to the illness or Satan.” (9) Luke 4 -18, John 20 - 21 [The entire chapter is checked and so is verse 21 - ‘Peace be unto you’]. (10) Mark 16 – 14, 15, 16 [the verses are checked in the Bible]. (11) Matthew 28 – 19, 20. (12) “Praise God. Ps. 149-150” [Both chapters are marked in the Bible]. (13) “John 15 – 7 [‘Abide in me’].

The general contents: (1) The names and order of the books of the Old and New Testament. (2) The Books of the Old Testament – with center column references. (3) “The New Testament of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” (4) “The Concise Bible Dictionary. . . Together with A New Concordance to the Authorized and Revised Versions, Combined with a Subject-Index and Pronouncing Dictionary of Scripture Proper Names and A New Indexed Bible Atlas” (5) A last cover page which has been removed. The Check Marks, Brackets, Underlining, and Occasional Comments

Throughout the Bible, various verses have a check mark next to them. Also, a number of chapters have a check mark next to them. Occasionally entire segments are surrounded by brackets. Occasionally entire verses or groups of verses are surrounded by brackets. And, from time to time, there are inscribed remarks by Clarence. The check marks, brackets, underlining, and remarks are in a number of different writing forms—sometimes red, sometimes black, and sometimes other colors.
Authenticating Personal Helps

Over the last twenty years of researching, interviewing, traveling, collecting, questioning, analyzing, writing, and publishing the history of Alcoholics Anonymous, I have been blessed to have a good many personal connections with those persons, writers, collectors, and sponsees who knew Clarence H. Snyder best. As a consequence, from Clarence’s own writings which I have seen, from the foregoing people themselves, and in the process of writing and reviewing or editing three separate books on Clarence, I have been able to piece together a firm foundation and familiarity with what the Bible meant to Clarence Snyder. This information came from my own knowledge of A.A. history, remarks and writings by Clarence and others, the documents themselves, my familiarity with how the Bible was regarded, studied, and used by the Akron pioneers—Dr. Bob, Anne Smith, Henrietta Seiberling, T. Henry and Clarace Williams, Clarence and his first wife Dorothy—and my own analysis of the role of the Creator, Jesus Christ, and the Bible in early A.A.

Here are some personal sources that have made the Clarence Snyder Bible come alive for me as an aid to understanding the early A.A. program, its Christian Fellowship, its stress on the Bible, its simple principles and practices, its literature and devotionals, and ultimately such of the ideas as found their way into the Big Book and Twelve Steps.

First, I have come to know personally and well the following sponsees of Clarence Snyder (and in many cases their spouses): Grace Snyder, Dale Morfitt, Steve Foreman, Jack Rapp, Berry W., and Mitchell K. Also, those close to Clarence that I met at or communicated with through the Snyder retreats where I spoke: Dick S., John S., Cathy, Danny W., Grace’s son Duke, Clarence’s son Dick, and Clarence’s long-time friend Ed Andy. I have heard many of them tell me about what Clarence did and believed. I have listened to and seen Clarence Snyder video talks. I have reviewed almost all of the Clarence Snyder papers that were given to Mitchell K. by Grace Snyder after Clarence’s death. And the end result is a pretty solid knowledge of how Clarence used, spoke about, taught about, studied, and believed throughout his life about our Creator, His son Jesus Christ, and the Bible. It is therefore in that backdrop that I found this actual Bible—over 100 years old--so interesting and challenging. Particularly since I now know how Dr. Bob and Anne and Henrietta regarded the Bible, the Book of James, the Sermon on the Mount, and 1 Corinthians 13.

Second, the seven principal sources as to what Clarence did with his Bible are these:

DR. BOB and the Good Oldtimers. When Niles Peebles was gathering material for this A.A. book, Niles interviewed Clarence and Dorothy, as well as the Smith children. And Niles quotes Clarence extensively in this “Conference-approved” book. Even more important, I have now acquired the manuscript copy of the Peebles pre-publication manuscript which contains a good deal of material that has been omitted in the official publication and yet contains a mound of data.

How It Worked, by Mitchell K. Mitch was sponsored by Clarence, is a Christian and Bible student, and a long-time A.A. When Clarence died, Mitch obtained all of Clarence’s papers from the widow Grace Snyder. He promised a biography of Clarence; and after many years, the work was complete. And it is filled with facts about Clarence and A.A. I saw Mitch’s Clarence Snyder papers and assisted in editing Mitch’s book.

That Amazing Grace, by Dick B. After meeting and getting to know Clarence’s third wife Grace at several Snyder retreats, I was blessed to be invited to her home in Florida. My son Ken and I spent a week interviewing her and reviewing such papers and recollections as she had. The resultant Amazing Grace book contains a great deal of information about Clarence, his Christian beliefs, his Bible knowledge, his teaching, and how he took AAs through the Twelve Steps and Big Book throughout the years.

In Florida, Clarence sponsored four men who called themselves the Four Horsemen. They were Steve F., Dick S., Jack R., and John S. All have participated extensively in the Snyder retreats before and after Clarence died. And finally, these men gathered together from Clarence himself materials he had written and views he had expressed. And they published two booklets, Going Through the Steps” and My Higher Power the Light Bulb” The material was approved by Clarence. These two classic Clarence pieces are still available through Steve F. in Winter Park, Florida.

Finally, about 2005, three of Clarence’s sponsees—men who had served as shepherds of
his retreats, been blessed by his inspiration, and been taught Clarence’s views as to how to meld the Bible, the Four Absolutes, the Big Book, and the Twelve Steps into a continuing force for helping the alcoholic who still suffered—undertook a lasting task. The men—Dale Morfitt, Steve F., and Jack Rapp—worked for more than a year sharing what they had learned from Clarence, presenting the way that Clarence had taken folks through the Steps, and memorializing his beliefs and his method of conducting spiritual retreats. These retreats still gather in all parts of the United States and Great Britain today. Their book is Our A.A. Legacy to the Faith Community: A Twelve-Step Guide for Those Who Want to Believe, by Three Clarence Snyder Sponsee Old-timers and Their Wives, Compiled and Edited by Dick B.

And now we have this Clarence Snyder Bible which truly highlights the ideas and beliefs that Clarence held about “Divine Aid” for the alcoholic who suffers. It documents the ideas that others have stated and written about his efforts.

Finally, the spiritual retreats for AAs and their families continue and grow to this day. It was at these retreats that I was asked and honored to speak about our history. It was at these retreats that I met scores of devoted AAs and their family members who gathered together at their respective area retreats about twice a year. There I met many Clarence Snyder sponsees and their families. There I met Grace Snyder. And there I saw the Clarence Snyder approaches still effective and in action.

Some Tentative Personal Observations

In the last twenty years, I have spent a good deal of time in the company of two of Clarence’s sponsees and their wives. I also spent a good deal of time with Grace Snyder before she died. Also, conversing with Mitch K. and Danny W. (who was sponsored by Grace). And, in the process of listening to their comments about Clarence and looking at their writing, I came to several conclusions which this Bible fortifies.

First, Clarence was a professing and practicing Christian from his earliest years. His many markings of John 3 and the verses about believing on Jesus indicate this. Clarence also believed in God, and his marking of Hebrews 11:6 supported this conviction.

Second, Clarence believed strongly in healing by the power of God. Several of his sponsees declared they were healed of serious problems as Clarence and Grace prayed for their recovery.

Third, Clarence believed in the integrity of the Word of God and in the importance of learning it and obeying it. This certainly included his underlining the verses specifying sinful conduct.

Fourth, he was an advocate of the power of prayer and the importance of doing it.

Fifth, like Dr. Bob and the Akron pioneers, he placed great emphasis on the Sermon on the Mount, 1 Corinthians 13, and the Book of James. He marked the very verses which formed the foundation for such Step ideas as “Thy will be done;” the personal inventory; confession; conviction; conversion; restitution; witnessing; and practicing Christian principles.

Sixth, he placed great store in the redemption that Christ’s sacrifice made available to believers.

Seventh, he also pointed specifically to the importance of the Ten Commandments; the two Great Commandments; and the sayings in the Beatitude.

Eighth, he stressed the power of God.

There is more, and more will be covered as study continues. I sincerely wish that other AAs were given the opportunity to review carefully Dr. Bob’s Bible, Anne Smith’s Bible, and T. Henry’s Bible. I had this privilege as to Anne Smith’s actual journal and other original documents such as the Amos reports, Bill Wilson’s actual manuscripts at Stepping Stones. And there is no substitute for the truth that can be found in the actual writings of the founders and pioneers.

I read Clarence Snyder's sponsor guide recently and pleasantly surprised to see something on him here. Had no idea there would be such a wealth of information!
Thank you!

Thanks to the writer for the comments. And my research and acquaintance with Grace Snyder and the Snyder retreats has enabled me to see that, in a very real sense, Clarence was the man responsible for bringing together the best of A.A. at the time the Big Book was published and Clarence founded the Cleveland efforts. There is now quite a body of material on this.

Congratulations to Deanna of California on her article. In today’s diverse 12 step and anonymous fellowships, there are a host of what I call nonsense gods that fall under the category of “higher power” as it is used by so many in recovery. Over a twenty year period of research and writing on the Biblical history and roots of A.A., and as an active recovered member, I have documented perhaps a hundred ridiculous names for a higher power that have been used in meetings, in literature, by professionals, in treatment, and occasionally even by clergy. Here are some: My higher power is a light bulb, a chair, a radiator, a table, the back end of a city bus, Santa Claus, Something, Somebody, “It,” Gertrude, Ralph, the Big Dipper, the Great Pumpkin, a Coke Bottle, a door knob, a rock, a group, a Group Of Drunks, Good Orderly Direction, and on and on and on. But whether you are a gambler or a drunk, it defies reason to pass along a message that you can get down on your knees, pray to a chair, and expect to be delivered from your affliction, addiction, or life-controlling problem. Let alone seek release from a rock or a light bulb. Psalm 115 dealt with that point centuries ago, and it’s a good read for anyone in recovery. Today, neither A.A. nor any significant number of recovery movements can be called “Christian.” Moreover, all invite atheists, humanists, agnostics, unbelievers, Buddhists, and folks of all religious persuasions, or none. So I would say to Deanna, “Good for you.” In A.A., at least, most of us are brain damaged enough at the beginning to swallow most of the nonsense we hear in meetings or are told by counselors. Perhaps those in GA are fortunate enough not to be lambasted with nonsense in their most tender, goofy, early days. But there is still room for God, for seeking His help, and for receiving it—wherever you find yourself out of control. That can be at a card table, a slot machine, a bar, a liquor store, a porn flik, a drug dealer’s quarters, prison, a homeless group, church, a hospital, treatment, rehab, or a therapist’s office. As for me, I needed all the help I could get almost twenty-four years ago. And I received it by turning to God for help and trying never to turn my back on a drunk who wanted to get straightened out, whatever his or her belief system. First comes surrender, then follows the choice as to what help to seek

Christian A.A. Days—Dr. Bob’s Wife Anne & Jesus Christ

Who Anne Smith Was, and How She Helped Found A.A.

Alcoholics Anonymous World Services, Inc., and the AA Grapevine have chosen to write very little about Anne Ripley Smith, the wife of A.A. cofounder Dr. Bob. Yet we know that A.A. was founded at the Smith home in Akron in June 1935. We know that Bill W. lived with the Smiths through the summer of 1935 when Bill and Bob were formulating the original A.A. program. We know that Dr. Bob’s wife Anne read the Bible to Bill and Bob every single day during the summer of 1935 and placed particular emphasis on the Book of James. We know that Bill W. said that Anne Smith and Henrietta Seiberling “infused much needed spirituality into Bob and me” [Bill W.] in that summer of 1935. And we know that Bill W. frequently called Anne Smith the “Mother of A.A.” and a founder of A.A.’s Akron Number One.

But the heart of what Anne was telling Bill, Bob, and all the early AAs and their families can be found in the personal journal that Anne kept and shared from 1933-1939 about the principles from the Bible, Oxford Group life-changing ideas, the way to conduct Quiet Time, which Christian books should be read, what to read in the Bible, and practical approaches to alcoholics.

I obtained a copy of Anne ‘s personal journal through the good efforts of Dr. Bob’s daughter Sue Smith Windows, the assistance of A.A. General Service archivist Frank Mauser, the help of Bill’s former secretary Nell Wing, and the approval of the Trustees’ archives committee. Then, when allowed to visit Stepping Stones archives twice in 1991, I saw and copied the cover of another copy of the journal—a copy which said it contained Anne’s notes. Also, in the back of the binder were several, well-known, early A.A. literature pieces. One was Soul Surgery. And several were pamphlets containing articles by Reverend Samuel M. Shoemaker, Jr.

Finally, I published several editions of my book about Anne’s journal, the last being titled Anne Smith’s Journal 1933-1939: A.A.’s Principles of Success. And if you want to see what Anne wrote, what is difficult or indiscernible to read, and how Anne’s writings related to A.A. history and the early Christian Fellowship in Akron, then this is the book for you.

A Synopsis of Anne Smith’s Frequent References to Jesus Christ

We know today that the Bible was stressed as reading material in early A.A. We know that Anne echoed this position when she stated in her journal: “Of course the Bible ought to be the main Source Book of all. No day ought to pass without reading it.” John R. came into the program in March 1939. And John specifically verified in writing and in his statement to
A.A. historian Dennis W. Cassidy the frequency of Anne’s use of her journal in meetings at Dr. Bob’s home. He said: “Before one of these meetings, Anne used to pull out a little book and quote from it. We would discuss it. Then we would see what Anne would suggest from it for our discussion.”

We know too from Dr. Bob’s statements that in those early days, there were no Steps, no Traditions, no Big Book to study, no drunkalogs, and no meetings as we see them today—meetings based on sharing “experience, strength, and hope.” Dr. Bob said that the pioneers “were convinced that the answer to our problems was in the Good Book.”

We also know that the use of Bible devotionals like The Runner’s Bible, My Utmost for His Highest, The Upper Room, Victorious Living, and Daily Strength for Daily Needs was a daily affair in Anne Smith’s morning Quiet Time sessions, in individual prayer practices by the pioneers, in some of the frequent daily fellowships, and in the one weekly “regular” meeting.

We know too that early AAs were required to profess a belief in God, and were required to make a decision for Christ, in which they accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. We know that Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount was declared to contain the underlying spiritual philosophy of A.A. And we also know that the study of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, the Book of James, and 1 Corinthians 13 was considered absolutely essential to the early successes.

Anne Discussed Jesus Christ and His Crucifixion on Many Pages of Her Personal Journal

I received copies of 64 pages of Anne’s personal journal from A.A. General Service in New York, some of which were redundant and a few hard to decipher. Of those 64 pages, I identified in my book about Anne’s personal journal more than 50 pages in which she mentions Jesus Christ. She certainly emphasized God’s Son in her journal!
Actual Quotes from Anne’s Personal Journal

For the reader’s benefit, I present below many of Anne’s references to Jesus Christ in her personal journal which I quoted in my title, Anne Smith’s Journal, 1933-1939. (The page numbers in parentheses are the pages numbers where these statements are quoted in my title.)

O Lord, manage me, for I cannot manage myself. (20)

Paul speaks of a wish toward good, but power to carry it out is lacking. A stronger power than his was needed. God provided that power through Christ. . . Christ gives the power, we appropriate it. (22)

God provided the power through Christ, so that we could find a new kind of relationship with God. . . . Takes the whole power of Christ to help us do the smallest thing. (24)

Judge not, that ye be not judged. . . . Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye. . . . Who checks another checks himself. If I have an urge to check because of personal feelings, I am not seeing in light of Christ’s love. . . . I had better look for the mote in my eye. (30-31)

Check your thoughts by the four standards of Christ. (32)

Follow Christ’s absolute commandment. (33)

Fear and worry are atheism. . . To be willing to be a fool for Christ’s sake is something different from being foolish. . . . I must let Christ run my life—always self before. (35-36)

Dangers of sharing: 1. Is it uncomfortable? 2. Is it dangerous to me, or my reputation, or to Christ? . . . Sharing in relationship to the Gospel: 1. Matthew 3:6 Sins Confessed. 2. Mark 1:5 Sins Confessed. Matthew 4:1-11 Christ shares his temptations. (38)

The next step is the Cross. Get them to the place where they appropriate it. . . . Have you a Christ that can rid you of your sins and send you on your way rejoicing. . . . The Holy Spirit is ready to dictate a perfect plan. (43)

A small sense of sin means a small sense of Christ. The closer you get to Christ, the more sensitive you become to sin. . . . It is because we have ignored sin in our presentation of the Gospel that the message of the Gospel has lost its sting and blasting power. Our first need is an emetic, not a narcotic. The emetic is facing the barrier, that is, our specific sins which are keeping us from Christ and from this complete and utter giving of ourselves to Christ. . . . The issue is to run away or surrender. Surrender to Christ or criticizer the group. (44)

A maximum experience of Jesus Christ leads to a radical change in personal life. . . . The moment I hear and obey His voice and come to the place of complete surrender on every area of my life, is the moment of rebirth, reunion with Christ, and a start on great revival campaign. . . . Surrender involves the explosive experience of a Holy Ghost conversion. (45)

Christ can only remove them [sins] and replace with a new quality of life. Read Romans 12. (47)

Am I so living with God that Christ is being breathed around? . . . A personal relationship with Jesus Christ depends on doing difficult things. (51)

As we grow closer to Christ we keep seeing more sin, but we know the cure. (52)

Christ told his disciples He had many things to tell them—“But you cannot hear it now.” (59)

Trust God fully for results. Walk by faith, not by sight. The Cross looks like a failure. Your guidance may look like failure. (60)

He must be kept constantly in the center of life as He is, seen in Christ. . . . This feeling of revulsion must be given up. Self is in the center of it, not Christ. . . . The Devil fighting to keep you for his own. . . . Get down on one’s knees and give up completely to Christ and His will for you, remembering that anything that pulls you down is your enemy. (62)

Prophets helped find God. His Son in the fullness of time when all else went awry. . . . Even the Christian church of today misunderstands Christ here. . . . A maximum experience of Jesus Christ leads to a radical change in personal life. . . . Crucifixion is open to the world so that anyone can see it was a public atonement. . . . It is a sick world—the remedy rests on Christ himself, the healer of the world. The decision to give my life to Christ involves discipline to keep a quiet time as my first waking act. (66)

‘’Not having mine own righteousness,’ is Paul’s phrase. The only effort we need to put forth is that of daily surrender and daily contact with Christ. We find release not by our own efforts but by what Christ does for us. . . . ‘Christianity is an obtainment not attainment. . . . The goal is ‘Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father in Heaven is Perfect. When Paul gave up trying to be good and surrendered his life fully to the Lord, then came peace, power, and joy. God’s gift in Christ is gladness and humility. (67)

And I quote many more of Anne’s references to Jesus Christ in her personal journal on pages 69, 70, 72, 76, 77, 85, 86. 87, 91, 105, 110, and in the Appendix of my title, Anne Smith’s Journal, 1933-1939.
