I am "sober" but barely. I have almost 7 months clean. I am lying and stealing and doing everything but using. I live in nyc.

Hi and welcome to the group. Have you tried going to AA meetings and getting a sponsor yet???
Jeff :17:
you already have a miracle, congrats on 7 months, I can't get 30 days together. We all lie, especially to ourselves, which is why I am here as a newcomer. There seems to be alot of wisdom on these pages.God Bless, Tom

:78: intheAM!! Hang in there, it takes some time to unlearn what we have been doing for so many years. But, today you don't have to do alone. :42:

At least you realize that what your doing is wrong and you see it. Many people do not. I guess you have to ask the questions to yourself why do you steal and why do you lie? Is it because you need money? I have a daugher who lies and steals from me. I lock everything up and hide the key ( she has found my key and got into my money.) When she lies now days I do not confront her,but feel sad for her that she feels she has to lie. Usally lies come out anyway. Anyway, congrats on 7 months sober and clean! Try working on your defects one day at a time too or see a professional. It can't hurt.

Everyday...a new beginning.
There are no disfuntional behaviors that operate outside of this truth: Meeting legitimate needs in illegitimate ways.
Do not confuse real needs with the illicit devices and shortcuts that we devise in an attempt to reach them.
One will never go away... and the other must.
Peace.

Have you looked into NA, getting a sponsor and working the Steps?.....being sober is more than not using or drinking, in fact it is everything else I think.....I was 'clean' for many years, but still an active drinker....I've been on the road of recovery with AA for over 3 years and have probably had a larger amount of that time dry, but still drunk....emotionally drunk!!! Still acting out of old behaviours, habits and beliefs; all things that working the programme, finding a HP and having a sponsor can help change!!!! Look forward to getting to know you some, keep coming back and take it easy hey!!

Congrats on sobriety! I'm glad you found the group. The first step in this whole process (as you already know) is acknowledging there is a problem. My advice would be the same as everyone else. Get a sponsor, if you haven't, go to meetings, and work those steps. "It works if you work it" !
