Hi oldn53. Are you doing this as part of your first step? If you go up to the link on the top for "12 Step," I believe it will take you to a site that gives some structure for doing the steps. This outline will give you some ideas to get you started. I don't remember it all off the top of my head, but my sponsor started me just by looking up the words in the dictionary and writing down the definitions. Then I explained more specifically what this meant in my life. I wrote down all the things in my life I am powerless over: illness, what other people do, acts of God, alcohol, etc., etc., that sort of thing. Then I had to write down specific instances of how my life had become unmanageable.
You also might want to read about the first step in the Twelve and Twelve.
These should be ideas to get you started.
If you are doing this as your first step and are working with a sponsor, then it is okay to talk to your sponsor more to get some direction.
Good luck!

I am powerless over ___________ and as a result of my obsessive compulsive desire to pursue __________ I am broke, my bills have not been paid, the bill collectors have not stopped calling me, and my house hasn't been cleaned since 1975. There is trash from floor to ceiling and I cannot find the cat litter box which doesn't matter anymore because I have become immune to the smell only to discover that the cats died from dehydration and lack of food because they were no longer a priority in my life.

How's that for a start?

My sposnsor told me to write down how I was powerless and how my life was unmanageble. No format no wrong way just get it down so you can find out the problem.Thats what step one is we identify the problem. And step 2 is ok with help we can fix the probem.knowing what the problem is half the solution.Alot of peoeple go through the steps and dont really know what the problem is(really)And dont make it.Just start writting and read the book.If your sponsor is anything like mine dont matter first time I wrote it down was wrong anyway and had to redo it again and again.

We must have had the same sponsor big al.

Truth: I no longer ask sponsees to write out First Steps. We read, I ask them if they can admit to their inner most selves that they are alcoholic, surrender to this disease and the process of recovery, and if they say "yes" we move on to Step Two.

If they want to journal or catalogue a list of unmanageability, I encourage them to do that on their own so they can see it in black and white. I don't need to see it as a sponsor. I know it. In fact, it has an odor and a noise.

Blessings for the day ahead...we get to share with another today, and I am looking forward to it!

On what I thought life was to be with alcohol. Powerlessness and Unmanageable. Two part of Step 1. For me is Admit and Accept. Step 1 is the most important "STEP"
