Welcome! Emotions and food are issues for me too. For me the best way is to deal with things a little at a time. I am currently working on one emotion (anger) and one food issue (not binging). I chose anger as my first emotion to deal with because I never really had problems with it..I'm not one to get angry very easily...so it's an easier emotion for me to start with. Stopping myself from binging is a first step for me with food. Next I'll choose another emotion to examine and I will work on controlling food portions to healthy sizes or maybe elliminating certain unhealthy foods from my daily choices (like ice cream, etc.). This has really worked for me but we are all different. I wish you luck....just know you are not alone!!!!

:67: I am so happy that you found us and are reaching out for help. Although I don't have issues with food, I do have a problem with my emotions. Even after being substance free for 2 years, it is sometimes difficult for me to define my emotions and to properly display them. It isn't easy but I'm not trying to do this alone and so I find that I am progressing. I know I'm on a lifelong journey but knowing that I'm not alone means everything to me.

This was a very good suggestion! Often times people can become overwhelmed when trying to address too many issues at once. Perhaps another method is to try and keep a journal of when and how often your emotional binges happen. This might help you to find a pattern and identify what sets you off. Then you can isolate that emotion or situation and begin to work on it little by little.

Hobbies also really help. When ever you start to feel that emotion that you identified coming on, redirect your attention by participating in a hobby. Getting friends involved will also help, as they can offer great support, a much-needed pick-me-up and help to keep your mind off of the negative or damaging emotions.

Good luck to you. I know that some people don't recognize eating disorders as serious conditions, but you've done a great thing by wanting to correct the problem. Know that you're not alone, and that support can always be found here. If you'd like, you can even come back and share your findings on the emotions that you've identified and we can offer further suggestions to help you overcome the eating and binges. Welcome!
