I was wondering if any of you drink non-alcoholic beer and what you think about it...How does it affect first week of sobriety and if you do drink it does it make you wan to drink the real thing. Interested to hear your comments...

Hugs - Lola

It is my understanding that there is still some alcohol in the "non"-alcoholic beer. Personally, I don't understand the point of drinking a non-alcoholic beer. If you want something fizzy, drink sparkling water.

Right, interesting responses. I drank one yesterday, but the sight of a "beer" bottle really did not make me feel good psychologically. I wasn't sure if it might be harming to the recovery process. Looking forward to hearing more inputs...

I'm with the above. Whats the point of drinking near beer when you cannot catch a buzz. I think beer taste yucky, but I drank it anyway to catch the buzz. I do not think it's a good idea to drink the stuff.

Lola,
I believe that non-alcoholic beer is for non-alcoholics. It would have been a trigger for me so I always stayed away from it. Best wishes as you begin your journey.

DaveH

READ the label real S L O W , you will see that non-alcohol beer contains a 1% , or 2% of alcohol, so one is too many and a THOUSAND is never enough!!! Well 0.5% is to much and a THOUSAND is never enough!!!

Actually, the German non-alcoholic beer bottle said 0.5% alcohol, which still did not make sense to me, since it claims to be non-alcoholic. Well, I better stick to my tea! Thanks for the inputs!

Not like sweet n' low, there's a point to that. I think if you're gonna mess around with beer, make it a good German lager. If you're gonna do it, do it right or stay away from it. For me, I wouldn't mess with it. I drink for the affect not the friggin taste.

Very wry Big Al, that gave me a laugh.
I am imagining what near cocaine would be - icing sugar with white pepper for the brain rush.
Lola - I have turned my love of flavours to all things non alcoholic this week. I love ginger beer with lots of ice & muddled lime - not so good for the weight - but truly delicous. Also made a big jug of iced tea with detox tea - it has lots of licorice which tastes great with fresh mint & slices of ginger. I think it's nice to treat yourself to a nice drink, I also like the ritual of it =- preparing something that is good for the taste buds & the soul.
How are you doing???
Is it o.k to ask that of people or do you guys prefer people to discuss the journey when they are ready???
Honey - Barb - day 5. Just going to read step 2 now -

Non-alcohol beer has alcohol in it. If you drank some you changed your clean date. That was a slip.
I also might suggest that you question your reasoning for wanting to drink it in the first place. Sounds like a reservation to me.

I don't mean to sound harsh,I just have real appreciation for truth.

Best wishes.

I did the non-alcoholic thing years ago before getting sober; at 11 pm I threw caution to the wind and downed a bunch of shooters because I needed to catch up with everyone else. Another time I switched a non alkie beer with the real thing and back again all night to moderate my drinking....I was playing around then and came to realize what a waste of money to pay for something I couldn't get buzzed off of. What was I thinking!

I think non-alcoholic beer is absolutely just fine. It is if you're a Non-Alcoholic. I wasn't a beer drinker, but did drink scotch. If the industry made a non-alcoholic scotch, I just can't see myself sitting around sipping it over an evenings conversation with someone for any reason. It just doesn't make any sense, and certainly wouldn't bring back any good memories whatsoever. Just bad ones.

Not a good idea!!! i would not mess around with it at all. there is a Latin drink Not alcohol) that is called Malta my moms use to make it for all of us at night mixed with eggs. I came into recovery and I could not drink Malta India due to it having 2% alcohol, so i had to go to a different brand....

Non alcoholics beer is not a good idea,It may not get you drunk, but a cop wpuld think you had been drinking if you were stopped. It also rings the bell inyour brain that real beer did, that way of thinking an alcoholic has.Try to go without.

As Lola said, I've a lot of success in giving up foods/quantities which can lead to diabetes by stocking an entire kitchen drawer with various kinds of tea, LOL!

Don't knock it till you've tried it, ha ha. :D

You might even become a connossieur (too lazy to find French dictionary to check spelling of that word...)

Tea is cheap and for the most part extremely good for you.

Here's to your health!

Near beer is like still hanging on and not letting go and giving it to God..........If i did something like that id get mad and throw the beer down and get a real one eventually.
And yes it does contain alcohol and so does mouth wash......I always buy non-alcohol mouth wash it can trigger the obsession which in turn sets you on the course for the vicious cycle.
No thanks

Near beer is like still hanging on and not letting go and giving it to God..........

The manufacturers of near beer count on it...all the way to the bank.
