Step Five
The dammed-up emotions of years break out of their
confinement, and miraculously vanish as soon as they
are exposed. As the pain subsides a healing
tranquility takes its place. And when humility and
serenity are so combined, something else of great
moment is apt to occur.
During Step Five I truly began to know God (HP) as I
understand Him. I do not understand how that occurred,
but it did. I trusted that I was no longer alone or
isolated as I was before. Gradually after working this
Step with God and a sponsor I had the ability to
actually look squarely at my eyes in the mirror with
out shifting away. The remorse and shame that I once
saw there was gone. I gazed at a reflection that
revealed my heart through my eyes, and the real me had
emerged. It was an amazing experience and one I will
not forget.
When drinking I never had the ability, nor wanted to
discuss anything about myself with anyone. I was way
too ashamed as I thought that others would think the
worse of me, as I thought of myself. Funny how those
thoughts do not enter my mind today as I reach out for
help from others. Truth telling and checking my
motives for each action that I take comes fairly easy
to me today. It is of the utmost importance for me to
check in with someone in the program in order to find
out if I am being honest and true to myself. Are my
motives selfish and extreme or are they based in the
highest good for others? Talking over something with
someone who is honest themselves helps me to become
more aware in defining my selfishness or my self
seeking ways. It sure works for me in the long run and
I am able to put into perspective just what is going
on with me and then act accordingly. I do not just
discuss what is going on with me to anyone who will
listen, but to those that I know work the program and
have what I want.
