Hi all, John gave me this yesterday (my spiritual guide) and I thought I'd share it with you. I shared with him that I have trouble "stilling my mind" often and he thought this might help.
A way to mediatate
Sit down. Sit still and upright. sit in silence. Close your eyes lightly. Sit relaxed but alert. Silently, interiorly begin to say a single word. We recommend the prayer phrase 'maranatha'. It is an Aramaic word meaning ' come Lord '. Used in this way it becomes a willing opening of your deepest Self to the Source of all things; of Love, Wisdom, Truth, Union, Being. Recite it as four syllables of equal length. Listen to it as you say it, gently but continuously.
You may prefer not to use a mantra but, rather, just be aware of your breathing in and out. Do not think or imagine anything - spiritual or otherwise. If thoughts and images come, these are distractions at the time of meditation, so pay them no attention; just keep returning to simply saying the word or being aware of your breath. Mediatate each morning and evening for between 20 - 30 minutes.
Healing begins with inner silence and stillness (you will probably find it helpful to at least begin with outer silence and stillness also). As we learn to sit, to be - silent and still - we detach from all the distractions of the mind and body, and are lead into union with our True self, the Christ-nature within, and, thus, to and the Ground of Universal Being whom we may reflect on as God. The deepest prayer, the deepest union.....the richest life....comes with inner silence and stillness.

I shared with Cassie earlier that I have also found shorter times of silence and stillness helpful to begin with, just to practice 'simply being'. I also say "I love You Father", this immediately takes me within to my essence of being, my core, my soul, where rests The Lord, awaiting Our unison, to be at one.
I used John's suggestion last night and to be perfectly honest, not only did I go deep within, I eventually went further into a deep and peaceful sleep.
