As I have mentioned prior I have pts and I am only in the early reovery process of this condition although I have been sober many years. For the past month I have struggle getting off to sleep and find that it about 4-5am before sleep finally kicks in. I don't take anything for this I just ride it out but I find the next day I am quite irritable due to a lack of sleep. I know when I first got sober I had this which was quite normal for someone in early recovery. Is this possible what is happening and that my insomnia is simply me being in early recovery from pts and this will eventually subside. Often I find myself meditating at this time to try and relax myself and to calm my overly active head. It seems to get worse when the menopause symptoms kick in every three months or so. Do others with pts suffer from sleep problems and is this simply a case of early recovery. Any thoughts appreciated.

PTS does not only affect your thoughts and emotions, it can affect your brain chemistry, too. Sometimes, while working through the troubling stuff, it is helpful to talk with your doctor and he can prescribe medication to help you sleep.

There are many different types of sleep aids and your doctor can give you one that is not addictive. Sleep deprivation can create serious imbalance in your thought processes and emotions. It can become way more than just an inconvenience.

Remember, HALT. Never get too...Hungry...Angry...Lonely...Tired. Maybe your doctor can help. Kai

Hi Fi, I have ptsd and sleep is a real problem for me also and I have 9yrs now in recovery. The nightmares are so real I wake up shaking and with a real feeling of living the nightmare. These lessen at times, I'm starting to see a relationship with stress. When I'm under stress they seem to become more frequent. I normally go days without using my ptsd meds until I'm sleep deprived and then i give in and take them and sleep well. Then I go with out again for 3or 4 days or until I really need the rest. I had these for many before and during recovery years and
with some months of relief in between. I see a therapist once a month and keep her updated on my mental health so it doesn't get out of hand. Just my experience with this. Your brother in recovery...John
