CONTEMPLATION - Step 11

Contemplation is an exercise in which we reflect on, or ponder, an issue. When we do not want to act too hastily or rashly, we take time out to think the issue through and determine what will be the best one for all concerned.

Back when our compulsive behavior neared the point of doing us in, our low tolerance for frustration had reached such a volatile stage that we reacted rashly and sometimes violently to whatever seemed to pose a threat to us. Our best defense-we thought-was an aggressive offense. And we rarely gave considered thought to what the consequences of our actions would be.

Now, recognizing that we still have Pavlovian reactions to familiar stimuli, we want to take time to really think through the issues confronting us. Although contemplation might not appear to be a bona fide meditation, it is one of the classic forms meditation takes.

Listening to inspiring music can also put us in a meditative state, as can watching a spectacular sunrise or sunset, observing the rhythmic break of waves on the shore, or just plain daydreaming.
