To Thine Own Self be True

by Lynne Thomas, M.A.

What would happen if you decided to love, accept and believe in yourself for no specific reason, unconditionally? Well, immediately you would feel a certain type of freedom, then hope, and then confidence. Your life would come alive in a new way. Your choices would change, your hopes and goals would change, your conversation and behavior would change. Your entire focus would be in a different direction; toward becoming the best person you could be, discovering and developing your talents, and enjoying your life. You would be putting into practice Shakespeare's wisdom, "To thine own self be true."

Do you know what interferes with this positive process? Negative thoughts! Disliking yourself and rejecting yourself are forms of self-betrayal. They create a devastating negative reaction that includes fear, doubt and shame, which immobilizes and restricts. Self-hate and self-rejection can create the greatest human pain. A pain that is developed by ones own thinking. Since most people receive conditional love from others, they tend to love themselves conditionally, if they love themselves at all. The result is masked emotional pain that quietly interferes with important life decisions, as well as reactions to everyday occurrences. "Every choice that you have made in your life depends on what you believe about yourself.

Your decision to love and trust in yourself is one of the greatest decisions you will ever make. As an individual, you have the potential to think any thought, and to hold any belief, that you choose. At this very moment, you can choose to love, and believe in yourself - without justification - unconditionally. Remember, it is your choice, no one else's. If you make this choice you will be giving yourself the freedom to live fully, to change and grow, and to become more than you ever dreamed possible. Your life would provide you with the answer to the question, "What would happen if you decided to love and believe in yourself!" Good luck!

When I first got my sponsor I have now, she had me make notes to myself to post by my mirror to read when I got up in the mornings. One said, "I love you", another said, "God loves you" and there were several other "positive notes" with things written on them to say to myself. I have to say they helped me to love myself along with all the folks in the fellowship. :D
