How other people see you and behave towars you inevitably affects you. But this is not what determines whether or not you have self respect.
Your self respect depends on how you percieve yourself and what choices you make.
Your life is made up of millions of choices. They don't all need to be made wisely. In fact they won't be. But they do need to be made consciously, whenever possible.
You need to be conscious that this is you who is choosing, you who is acting, you who is reacting, you who is responding.
Your choices - especially your choices of values, attitudes and behaviour - will shape your life more powerfully than your genes, social conditioning, upbringing or opportunities.
The power to make positive choices is arguably the greatest gift that we human beings have. It is the gift of conscience and of consciousness. treasure it.
