Self respect, like happiness, lives or dies on how you treat other people - as well as yourself.
If you behave reasonably well most of the time, if you are able to apologise when you have hurt someone and genuinely make amends, if you value 'giving' more than 'getting,' if you are able to learn from your mistakes and move on - then self respect is certainly within your grasp.

Sometimes what is suggested in the Bible and the Fellowship, sounds like alot of hogwash. Until one actually practices it. Athough, the Bible does not actually suggest these things. I never believed that, to do unto others as I would have them do unto me, would ever bring me any happiness. Till I had to practice it as a principle that would identify my own recovery.
