The Light
Playing in the sunlight
happy as can be;
making images with my shadow
was a past-time filled with glee.
My shadow followed faithfully
while playing in the light,
always willing to tag along
and never out of spite.
Then I found new playmates
they truly made me laugh;
blindly I would follow them
onto a darkened path.
Frolicking in the darkness
was fun for a short while,
but as I spent more time there
I found I lost my smile.
With hope I ran back to the light,
but I was blinded by the glare.
Looking down, I was filled with guilt,
my shadow was lying there.
In fear I ran back to the night
to Quench my shame with false delight.
Looking for my smile
I wandered aimlessly:
finding only desolation,
I was filled with agony.
Then a whisper called out to me,
from somewhere in the night.
It sounded like the shadow
that I left back in the light.
"Close your eyes and listen", it said,
"I'll tell you where to go."
"I'll lead you back into the light but,
you have to take it slow."
"Why", I cried, "I'm dying,
going slow just don't seem right!"
"Your eyes so used to darkness", he said,
"could never take the light."
So I closed my eyes and listened
for the way I was to go,
and soon I was united with
that friend from long ago.
Reunited with my shadow
has brought me such delight, but,
the voice that I was hearing
was coming from the light.
