Readings

On an overcast day, how many people do you suppose give a thought to the sun as they tend to their business? Indeed, many of us never even look up, contemplating the wonders above us. But then a west wind blows the clouds away, and the sun is revealed in all its warmth and splendor. At times like these, we all turn our heads to welcome its light, and just for a moment, our minds are lifted beyond their earthly pursuits.

What happens to our vision when the sun breaks through the clouds is just what happened to Nathaniel. When he heard Philip’s description of Jesus, he seemed unmoved. What was it that opened his eyes to the truth about this man from Nazareth? Although Nathaniel was a devout Jew, it wasn’t his meditation or study that made him declare, Rabbi, you are the Son of God! you are the King of Israel (John 1:49). Only a direct encounter with Jesus let him know with certainty what he had doubted a few moments before. Nathaniel received revelation, not just information! In the same way, it is through revelation that God’s love breaks through the clouds in our lives, attracts our gaze, and engages our hearts.

This breakthrough happens all the time. A teenager who had once found the Bible unreadable now experiences a burning in her heart as she meets Jesus in his word. A young man prays alone in his room to be healed of alcoholism, and experiences the presence of God in a way that changes his life. A weary single mom cries tears of joy as the love of God breaks through as she prays before the Blessed Sacrament. While driving down the road, an embittered son feels unexpectedly moved by the power of God to forgive his parents.

Are you receiving revelation? Are you encountering Jesus? Don’t just believe in your brain but never lift up your heart. Ask the Holy Spirit to part the clouds and reveal Jesus to you today. When we do encounter him, he fills us with a joy and excitement that nothing in this world can match. It’s then that the Holy Spirit can direct us toward his plan for our lives.

Holy Spirit, I am amazed at your faithfulness. When I turn to you, you open my eyes to the wondrous light of Christ. Today, remove the veil so that I can see the glory of God!
