The Future
A chick just starting to peck its way out of its shell can only be aware of what is inside the shell. Human beings live in a kind of shell too, a shell of space and time, and their consciousness of what lies outside is dim. But at death, the shell cracks and they are liberated from its confines into a fuller kind of consciousness. They experience the resurrection.
We try to live fully in the present moment, doing our part to form a community of peace and justice that radiates the love and presence of God. But at the same time, we believe in all the promises of the gospel, hoping for the full freedom of the future, when we shall be liberated from the shell of space and time. We look forward to the full life that will be ours through the promise of the resurrection, for this promise adds meaning and joy to our present moment.
Teach me not to doubt or dismiss your promises about eternal life, Lord, but rather to trust enthusiastically in your magnificent generosity.
