The God of You

If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny himself.
2 Timothy 2:13

Luke 15:11-32

Famous English actor Anthony Hopkins was viewed as a bit of a prodigal by his fans in London when he left home to spend a decade in Hollywood making films. But when he returned to the London stage, the audiences that loved him once loved him still; they treated him like the favored son he was. Unconditional love, whether for prodigal actors or prodigal sons and daughters, is the welcome mat in front of an always-open door.

No one loves more unconditionally than God. As Jesus' story of the Prodigal Son demonstrates, it matters not how decisively we turn our backs on Him, He never fails to look for our return. Jacob was the rascally son of the patriarch Isaac. He spent most of his life going his own way instead of God's. Yet even after Jacob's countless spiritual missteps, God still referred to himself as "the God of Jacob" (Exodus 3:6). Parents are sometimes embarrassed to be identified with their wayward child, but not God. You have not yet acted in such a way as to make God turn away from you--and you never will. Are you far from your spiritual home? God is still waiting for you.

Repeat: "I worship the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and (insert your name here)."
