I Just Came to Talk

by Gail Rodgers

Eileen had a beautiful voice. When we were roommates in Bible College I heard her sing a song that often comes back to my mind. I don’t remember all the words but two lines often surface in my memory ….

“I just came to talk with you, Lord.
I’ve no special favor to ask;
I just came to talk with you, Lord.”

So often when I go into my quiet time with the Lord I have many favors to ask. My quiet time came be taken up with the many requests and needs that I want to bring to my Heavenly Father. And I know He is there to listen and help.

Yet there are often times when I know He just calls me into His presence to talk with Him… to lay my request list aside for a while and simply…
* Remember who He is and thank Him for that.
* Listen for His still small voice as I read His Word.
* Ask Him what’s on His heart.

There are times in His presence when we come and lay our burdens in His lap.
There are times we deeply intercede in prayer for needs that are great.
There are times we pray with no words, knowing that He hears our hearts.

Yet, there are also times He calls us into His presence simply to drink, to fill up, to stop the busyness and simply “be” as we focus on Him and who He is.

There are times to simply stop…. and be filled again with the freshness of His Holy Spirit flowing in us and through us.

He promises refreshing…

“Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him” (John 7:38).

If it’s been awhile since your heart was refreshed in His presence plan to set aside some time to get there. Set aside your list of requests. Let some praise music wash the dust off your soul and listen…. to His Word and to His heart as you allow Him to listen to yours.

~Heavenly Father,
We thank you that You offer us an open invitation to “come.” Thank you that Your presence is always open for us to enter and find refreshing. Remind us that we do not need to run weary. Help us to be intentional in coming into Your presence and allowing Your Spirit to refresh us and fill us. We praise You for being the Living Water that wells up within our souls. In Jesus’ name we thank you, amen.

Questions to ponder: Describe to us about a time when you “just came to talk with the Lord” and had no favor to ask of Him. Why is this exercise so important?
