Spiritual Experience

The terms "spiritual experience" and "spiritual awakening" are used many times in this book which, upon careful reading, shows that the personality change sufficient to bring about recovery from alcoholism has manifested itself among us in many different forms.

Yet it is true that our first printing gave many readers the impression that these personality changes, or religious experiences, must be in the nature of sudden and spectacular upheavals. Happily for everyone, this conclusion is erroneous.

In the first few chapters a number of sudden revolutionary changes are described. Though it was not our intention to create such an impression, many alcoholics have nevertheless concluded that in order to recover they must acquire an immediate and overwhelming "God-consciousness" followed at once by a vast change in feeling and outlook.

Among our rapidly growing membership of thousands of alcoholics such transformations, though frequent, are by no means the rule. Most of our experiences are what psychologist William James calls the "educational variety" because they develop slowly over a period of time. Quite often friends of the newcomer are aware of the difference long before he is himself. He finally realizes that he has undergone a profound alteration in his reaction to life; that such a change could hardly have been brought about by himself alone. What often takes place in a few months could seldom have been accomplished by years of self discipline. With few exceptions our members find they have tapped an unsuspected inner resource which they presently identify with their own conception of a Power greater than themselves.

Most of us think this awareness of a Power greater than ourselves is the essence of spiritual experience. Our more religious members call it "God-consciousness."

Most emphatically we wish to say that any alcoholic capable of honestly facing his problems in the light of our experience can recover, provided he does not close his mind to all spiritual concepts. He can only be defeated by an attitude of intolerance or belligerent denial.

We find that no one need have difficulty with the spirituality of the program. Willingness, honesty and open mindedness are the essentials of recovery. But these are indispensable.

"There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance - that principle is contempt prior to investigation.

- Herbert Spencer"

Spiritual Experiences

I felt lifted up, as though the great clean wind of a
mountain top blew through and through.
--Bill Wilson

We each have our own spiritual experiences. Sometimes they are small,
quiet happenings that we hardly notice, but can feel deep down in our souls.
Other times they are explosive realizations that change our lives.
All of them are miracles.

At one time, we never would have noticed these wonderful experiences.
Now we can get quiet and look into our souls
and marvel at what is happening there.
We are spiritual as well as physical beings.
Our physical side used to dominate us
and keep us from getting to know the spiritual.
Now we can learn to know and appreciate every part of our beings.
This is the miracle of our lives.

"The Reality of Spiritual Experience"

Perhaps you raise the question of hallucination versus the divine imagery of a genuine spiritual experience. I doubt if anyone has authoritatively defined what an hallucination really is. However, it is certain that all recipients of spiritual experiences declare for their reality. The best evidence of that reality is in the subsequent fruits. Those who receive these gifts of grace are very much changed people, almost invariably for the better. This can scarcely be said of those who hallucinate.

Some might think me presumptuous when I say that my own experience is real. Nevertheless, I can surely report that in my own life and in the lives of countless others, the fruits of that experience have been real, and the benefactions beyond reckoning.

Spiritual expereinces are real...They may not come like a burning bush...Some do not recognize them becasue they seem small...to some maybe even insignificant..
In the many 24 hours I have been in recovery there have been so many spiritual experiences...to numerous to list. For me...I had to learn to listen and watch...intently and closely. In early recovery I had so much denial and doubt and skeptism and did so much rationalizing and justifying that I was not able to see the expereinces..It was through working the steps many times before i cam eto realize just how closed off I was and as i worked the steps over and over..more and more levels of honesty , willingness , and acceptance came. So in a way the saying I heard ewarly on really is true.."We came. We come to..... and then We came to believe..."
I am once again working through the steps...this time with excitement and anticipation of a deeper spiritual experience and more awakenings.

Spiritual experiences are what we make of them. Do we make mistakes or do we live an opportunity from which we can learn. Do I see a coincidence or is it truly the spirit at its most perfect timing. Not everything comes from God, but God can make use of it all, all he needs is for us to make something good of it.

You pose some great questions

For me...when it was explained I needed a new pair of glasses I began to see things from a different perspective...

All expereinces can be lessons from which I can learn from

Good readings and good comment. It was explained to me that spiritual experiences were Gods hand in my life helping/saving me, spiritual awakening is a change of perceptions after working the 12 steps-- just like it says in the 12th step. As I look back all those "moments of clarity" were spiritual experiences to me, when I worked the steps just as Allaflutter said "For me...when it was explained I needed a new pair of glasses I began to see things from a different perspective...", it only happened after working ( action ) and understanding ( applying ) all the 12 steps in my life. I am not just thinking of "myself" or what "I" can get out of life, life has a deeper meaning and having a model to follow and imitate gives me something to strive for! The love that God has for us to give His only Son for all of our sins, then for Jesus to willingly take this role and live as a human being to complete is truly amazing! To have a book in which is full of His examples, emotions, and guidance to realize what life is about and how to apply it is a savings grace. To be able to see that is a miracle! Thank you for letting me share, God Bless!!!
