Leading Discussion at Open Discussion meetings

Post subject: Leading Discussion at Open Discussion meetings
Hi - I got asked to be the discussion leader at one of my meetings tonight. Any tips on how long to speak, etc?
Carol87 - Fri 07 Apr, 2006 4:46 pm
Post subject:
I assume you are talking about presenting the topic (as opposed to telling your story)? I don't know about a set time to speak but if I'm chairing a meeting, when we get to the topic, I read from approved literature ... almost always the big book or 12 and 12. Sometimes I use Daily Reflections but if so, I frequently read the parageraph in front of and the paragraph after the lead-in quotation. From there I share how the reading fits into my own ESH. I have never timed myself but I'm sure it is less than ten minutes, probably somewhere between 5 and 10 minutes. I've been told to keep it brief and to the point.

I'm not sure that is what you were looking for since procedures vary from meeting to meeting.
free2bunme - Fri 07 Apr, 2006 4:54 pm
Post subject:
thanks carol. yes, i was looking for time limits - 5 - 8 minutes is what i was thinking......i plan to read from today's "24 hours a day" and share my ESH on what it means to me...hopefully thats ok.
Carol87 - Fri 07 Apr, 2006 4:58 pm
Post subject:
Sounds like perfect timing ... if you go much longer, you might lose the attention of the members. The ony point I would make about reading from 24 Hours is that it is not conference-approved material ... that is an issue only if your meeting has a guideline to use only conference-approved literature.

Good luck ... I'll be anxious to hear how it goes!
free2bunme - Fri 07 Apr, 2006 5:10 pm
Post subject:
really? i did not know that ... hmmmm.....well then why is it sold at my meeting?
Carol87 - Fri 07 Apr, 2006 6:03 pm
Post subject:
It all depends on the group ... as in "Each group should be autonomous except ...
