My mentor was Ed. A housepainter by trade, and a high school dropout, Ed was the Wisest man I have ever met. It may have had something to do with the condition of his Big Book. Coverless, held together with rubber bands, and covered with notes in his eccentric handwriting. He was given the Book by my Grandsponsor, Bob H. Ed showed me how to approach God, and how to pray. In the beginning, he asked me to explain to him what a typical prayer might be. I went on at length, protect her, safe trip for him, lead me to, etc.He stopped me and said. "Bill, God is everything, all Love, all knowledge, all caring. He loves his children more than any of them will ever understand. He also has a Plan for Them. He also knows your Heart, and what you need. He will direct and guide you, this is promised. You are trying to get His attention, and ask for His action. Bill, you must pray not to get God's attention, you must Pray to get YOUR attention. The best Prayer is: Thank You." "Go and be with another alcoholic, in God's grace your life will unfold."
