Hello,
I have just signed up as a new member - have been smoking for 34 years. I tried to quit yesterday and was good for one hour. I went all day though and then went out to buy cigarettes at one o'clock in the morning. Now I am experiencing anxiety over my inability to stop. I need help. I have looked for meetings in my area but there aren't any. So here I am. Thank you for being here.... |

There is hope. I went to Learn to be Tobacco Free program. It's open to the public and free of charge. Try it where your at. I'm going on three months and I smoke for close to 30 years.

I smoked for around 20 years. I quit March 16, 2007. I continue to take it one day at a time. That was not my first time quitting. I have quit a couple of times in the past. Once I quit for 2 years (my early 20's) , another time for about 4 months (I was 34) and another time for a month and a half ( I was in my 40's). Now I have been quit for over 17 months and I am 47. One day at a time. As long as we are alive and breathing there is hope. I prayed for the obsession and compulsion to smoke to be removed from me <<<< this is what my sponsor suggested I do. I prayed this for several years. God's time not mine. Keep coming back and sharing. We are here for you.

Keep trying! It isn't easy but the first day is the very toughest. If you can make it through that one day, just think how terrific you will feel! Don't worry about tomorrow, it will come in its own good time. When you get up in the morning on the second day, remind yourself that you got through an entire day already without a cigarette and note how much better you feel.
A little planning helps too. When you get a major craving, have something ready to do that will distract you. Make yourself think of something else that will lift your spirits, what ever that might be for you. Because I'm kind of housebound, I tend to feel better if do housecleaning (go figure), so that is what I do when the craving really hits, but anything that will distract you (well, within reason) will take you those extra few minutes, hours, days away from your last cigarette. But keep trying and remember to celebrate your sucesses, whether it is just for an hour or two, or a day or two. You can do it!
