The Stranger In The Mirror
The Stranger in the Mirror
I looked in the mirror one day An old man looked back my way Do I know him I thought in my mind I searched for an answer but had none I could find I knew it was none other but me But who I was I could not see Forty or more years have passed me by I than noticed a tear in the corner of my eye Rarely have I stopped to look at that man How I did lie to myself I could not understand I'm not that bad off I've said a thousand times Lying to justify my self centered ways Most of my years were spent in a haze I've hurt so many who were close to me Self-centered and selfish as I could be Than came the time I wanted to change First surrender and than rearrange I got down on my knees and prayed to God Oh please help me Help me to help myself in this new walk As I work the steps and listen to the talk First I must learn to listen than listen t learn Be honest and open and work the steps to freedom Travel the path of my sisters and brothers Do my best as I recover Learn to walk in recoveries way Count my blessings from day to day Trust in God to help me work the steps To discover the man in the mirror I get what I need to work the program From God and my sponsor People who know me say I have this glow They say they can see a change in me I just love this program of recovery I do feel a lot more serene No longer am I angry and mean Finally at peace with the man in the mirror Here are the steps that I took One to three was surrender Four to nine was house cleaning and amends No longer my ways must I defend Ten to twelve I maintain and give it away As I work this program from day to day I now love that man in the mirror I'm here to say I want sobriety to last forever But I can only get it for today Get it and love it Than give it away to keep it I'm so grateful to God and my new family As I travel this path in recovery Daniel M Corkery 9/18/00 DMCDREAMER1@ aol.com DMCDREAMER's Page of Poetry www.geocities. com/dmcdreamer |
